GM/SS Completion

There are few twins I’m aware of in GM. One of these is Creigh Hill ES-064 and another was Carn Liath ES-020 (a very apt name as you walk up the path towards Culardoch ES-015).

Carn Liath was detwinned (or untwinned if you want) earlier this year and the former twin, Creag an Dail Bheag will be the Marilyn. The thing about both of these twins is the actual drop between the peaks is not much, 38m for Creigh Hill’s Cairn Motherie and Cairn Plew tops, 42m for Carn Liath and Carn an Dail Bheag. However, this new twin shows a very noticeable drop: From An Gearanach to An Gharbhanach is about 450m and the drop is 7m, then it plunges and climbs 116m to Stob Choire a’Chairn in 650m. So it’s very noticeable.

For those wondering when these updates will be included in the program… there’s no rush as we still have lots of unactivated summits in GM and many that haven’t been activated for 5+ years. It’s also gives me a chance to bag some of them. Well, if I’m the man who has to track the changes, it seems fair I should change them when it suits me! Although the unactivated count has taken a bash in the last 2 weeks, I did 3, Paulrald G4OIGMD did 3 and Colwyn MM0YCJ has just done Askival SI-009 on Rum. I would imagine a few more Rum unqiues will be about to fall today!

Please don’t add a new ES in the near future - I’m nearly there for the complete set!
I had one summit left to do in the National Park and then the politicians went and made it bigger and added in a whole basketload of SOTA summits within the new boundary

Horrid weather yesterday and had to bring one of the walking group off the hill - somedays I hate hill walking

SOTA Listings you can never trust them (;>J - GM/SI-009 & SI-033 went yesterday through the intrepid endeavors of Colwyn & his XYL Anne. They were attempting SI-014 also but I never heard them. Strange they were really strong on the two previous ones!

So here are the 10 oldest activations in GM. Must be time for someone to do these again?

Hi Andy,

Maybe I’m thick (usually my normal state) but are you saying that these 10 are the oldest to have been only Activated once?

And. If it’s easy to extract - what was the first GM summit Activated and what was the first GM/SS?

Cheers

No just the oldest “last activation” and I should have said that. So the summits could have older activations but that would need some digging about.

The pair of summits of Liathach will have to wait for an experienced hillwalker with a good head for heights - Am Fasarinan is a good bit more than a Granny-stopper!

As for the twins - and the twins in the Mamores are really triplets! - as long as the AZ encloses both summits the matter is trivial, if you activate one summit then you automatically activate the other one at the same time, so the only question really is which way around you put both names in the database. Even that is trivial - if the GM database is prepared to put WS-074 as Aonach Eagach - Sgor nam Fiannaidh, which is definately the tail wagging the dog! - then the summits might as well go in alphabetical order!

Look out for GM/WS-324 next week, should be a complete for Christine & Ken if we get prop to Edinburgh.

I often wonder whether anyone been out to put a bet on which will be the final GM summit to be activated. Any suggestions Brian?

We don’t know what the final summit will be, the trickle of new ones seems likely to continue as the Mad Measurers trample around the highlands!

I see Jack’s doing SS-173 today…

Any chance of nipping over to SS-188 and giving us the complete?

I will put my money on either GM/SI-204 or GM/SI-214

I am not surprised… of course we know someone who will be rather miffed to have missed both. At least we get only half a slapped wrist.

This means that all GM/SS SOTA will have been activated meaning unactivated GM SOTA summits will be in GM/WS, GM/NS and GM/SI. This is until the GM summit changes have been done. I done think it is likely that the sea stacks will be activated unless Adrian @MM0DHY and Colwyn @MM0YCJ are seriously planning to climb up and activate the sea stacks.

That’s not hard enough Jimmy. The ultimate for GM has to be a SSS2SSS, i.e. a sea stack summit 2 sea stack summit.

Technically, these may not be as hard as we make out. Their respective heights are 196 and 172 metres, so an activator only needs to climb 46 and 22 metres to be in the AZ, I would bet on convenient ledges to be available! Getting there, and in favourable sea conditions, is another matter!

A 150m AZ rule. Now there’s something. Let’s hope others haven’t been allowing themselves such a luxury.

…you would hope that members of the MT might have some idea of the rules!
