Flinders Trip Update

Well 2 out of 3 aint bad considering .
My third summit was abandoned due to the walking track running out about 3 km from the real summit. After advice from the parks people the track was no where near and they did not want me to leave the track and go bush bashing .So my advice would be don’t bother activating in Wilpena Pound unless you go to St Marys Peak as that has a walking track, save your time and fuel for the other 4 summits 3 x 8 pointers and a 10 ner . That score would have been good to help on my way to a 4 quarter of goat. Mondays Summit was good I found an easier way to get there , and Tuesday I found the summit after 2km of bush bashing hoping it was cool enough for the Brown snakes to stay under their rocks. So about 20 plus km of walking and some good contacts from chasers
was had by all . I even had a nice chat at the camp fire back at the park and a couple cleansing dark ales with some folk from vk6 , not radio people but very interested in my story anyhow.
That might be my last chance to go that far north for this year it will be too hot soon but my trip out to the northeast area is still going in a couple weeks hopefully once Hugh gets off night shifts for this roster.
wish I could upload some photos but I have not worked out how to do that bit yet.
I better get these logs done .

Hi Ian,

Wondered how you would go activating Binya Peak. I followed the walking track to the top of Olssen Bagge and could see Binya Peak a few km away, unfortunately could also see cliffs and thick scrub in the way…

See my blog VK1DI's Blog: SOTA Attempted Activation Binya Peak VK5/NE-015

Sounds like the parks people won’t let you scrub bash there anyway.

Good Photo’s Ian on your blog and yes we were both looking at the same things across that gully.
I did scramble down a little way towards the gully but in the back of my mind was getting stuck or falling and needing a rescue job so I turned for the car. Plus I think it will require a much earlier start like day break to make that trip safely. But the positive is now i’ve been there I won’t be wasting any time walking to the wrong hills in Wilpena. Thanks for your comments and link .

Much to my surprise I hear vk3asc /5 working stations from Binya Peak so I hope he posts some photos and talks about his walk to Binya Peak a day after I failed to get there. I’d be very interested to know the way there. !!

Yes saw his spots. I think access may be possible by walking through the pound then up the side of Binya Peak. Some scrub but would avoid the cliffs. Must ask Mark which route he went.

That will be my next attempt path also probably be quicker too.
