Yesterday’s activation of SM/JL-001

Hi dear chasers,

I would like to express my apologies for the incident that happened during my cw operation yesterday (my first ever cw SOTA activation), where I accidentally turned the main knob of my ft-817 and changed my freq by several kHz without noticing it. Yes, some of you tried to inform me about it but it took me some time to actually realize it. Lessons learned, use the lock function next time. And of course I need to improve my cw skills.
Conditions were not so great on the summit, hence I did not use my end fed wire antenna, but my atx telescopic antenna instead.
It was a 7 days long hike on the Swedish mountains activating two summits, SM/JL-010 at Aug 3, and SM/JL-001 at Aug 5.

Welcome and don’t worry about the errant knob, I suspect we’ve all done it - I know I have!

Any photographs from your trip we can see? That looks a remote area. Did you approach from Norway?

Hi John,
No, the hike was only in Sweden, started and ended in Ljungdalen. It was a loop and the last stop was the base camp of SM/JL-001.
Attached some photos, where the glacier is also visible.

Hi Filip

Nice part of the world.

If it’s a remote part of Sweden, were you camping or staying in huts?

Paul

Hi Paul,

I was carrying my tent, only camping.
It was my second multi day hike in Sweden (the previous was back in 2016 in Kebnekaise and Abisko) and I have done similar ones in Norway and Iceland.
From these three countries of northern Europe I find Sweden the easiest to camp, the terrain is rather softer and the weather is milder. Of course, I am only referring to summer season.

Hi Filip

Multi day trips can be popular in the US too.

My first was in a super pretty part of the Eastern Sierras under the Minarets around 2000.

I recently activated a peak overlooking the area and was struck by its beauty.

Jeep camping seems easier nowadays!!

Hi Paul,
Very nice photo!
I visited Oregon and Washington states two years ago, and did some short hikes there, one was around Mt Rainier and another one that I remember entering the Pacific Crest trail near Portland for two days. Really nice! Would be great to do a multi day hike in US and have also my rig and radio permission there to do a summit activation.
