Nope.
No it isn’t.
It’s compensation for the difficulty, not to incentivise potentially dangerous expeditions.
In many associations the seasonal bonus only applies to summits with more than 2 points. For example, in GI it only applies to 4 point and higher summits. Would a 1 point summit here also have a seasonal bonus in your system?
Not having a seasonal bonus doesn’t stop anyone from activating the summit at any time.
You can be both types of Activator… in fact I am ![]()
So wait a minute, giving a bonus to places that are even harder to reach , which encourages even more danger? ![]()
I mean, it’s not what he said, but ok, I’ll bite. Rule 3.7.4:
Activators must be competent to undertake their proposed Expedition and must carry suitable
equipment, taking account of the terrain, weather conditions etc
No one who is competent to undertake a proposed expedition is going to do something more dangerous for the sake of a few measly SOTA points.
Anyway, generating random AI images and posting them to this thread like the reflector somehow works like Facebook isn’t the way to resolve this. The way, as highlighted above by several people and by the General Rules, is to work with your Association Manager, who works with the MT to set the bonus. Please read Rule 3.11.1 for more details.
The reason why the reflector won’t work is no one here is going to have any real sympathy for the debate, because regular as clockwork, every year, as people are cooped up in their shacks during Northern Hemisphere winter, someone decides they need something special for their special part of the world and feels that the reflector is the right place to argue their point. And, regular as clockwork, they are surprised at how few people support their special proposal for their special part of the world.
Now, I’m off to stare at my local 8-point and up winter bonus summits and decide which ones I might be competent enough to undertake an expedition to in 6 months time (answer, 1, maybe 2).
I’ve read this thread entirely and nobody can answer, what the harm is making the bonus for all summits, what is the harm exactly and the reason?
Exactly!
For God’s sake, if the conditions are hazardous stay in the ruddy shack! It sometimes looks as if people do not read the rules of the game! Only an idiot will go out in the wrong conditions just for the sake of a point or two, and if you do not have the skill and experience to recognise dangerous conditions you should only be on the hill in the company of someone who is more experienced. Hiking, rambling, hill walking, mountaineering, rock climbing - its all about managing risk.
IF IT IS TOO NASTY FOR ONE POINT, IT IS TOO NASTY FOR TWO POINTS.
Its as simple as that.
Earlier in this thread I told everyone what the proper procedure is to suggest a change in the rules. I have just checked the MT reflector, and nobody yet has cared enough about this issue to put a proposal to the MT. Guys, I’m sure you are having fun here discussing this, but unless you care enough to take it further then this thread is just idle chat.
Higher elevation = more snow and ice usually , that is a fact , which increases risk of getting hurt.
Higher elevation = more summit points
A lower elevation 1 point summit= less risk of falling on ice etc
By making a ruling that says “ winter bonus is only for 2 point summits or more, it’s saying , if you want more points , you need to accept more risk. Which is a reward of 3 more points
You are encouraging people to get more points if you accept more danger and going to higher summits in the winter
A 1 point summit could be green 45 degrees and no snow, a 2 point summit could be 30 degrees ice all the way up and snowing
I refer you back to my answer to you in the third post in this thread.
Here’s a 10 pointer that I’ve been up twice (before getting my license): Sotadata3
You can see that most activations have been during milder months, outside of the bonus period. Most activators seem to prefer to do it when it’s milder - their choice based on ability and availablity.
Routes to Dom Planika (400m below the summit) vary from hiking with ‘easy’ ferrata to some harder routes (it depends on where you’re approaching from) - but even when approaching from Bohinj (for example), there’s a simpler route or a tastier route (for which a harness would be sensible). Routes to the summit can cary in difficulty too (depending on what people choose to do).
Some might already like winter mountaineering (and have the relevant experience) - which is great, good for them.
Not all ascent paths are as ‘easy’ as each other, yet the same number of points apply to the operator at the same time of year.
Personally - when I went up it, I was always willing to back off. If at any point I felt that it was going to be slippery or dangerous - I’d have returned to Dom Planika and called it a day…
…and that’s after spending £££ and time to travel there in the first place (something more tangible than points).
I reckon any sensible mountaineer would assess conditions and plan/act accordingly, regardless of points. I doubt they’d risk becoming a SK for the sake an extra 3!
