Winter activation of Monte Terminillo I/LZ-305 2216m

Today I finally managed to get back to the mountains, together with two friends, Marco and Guido, we decided to climb Monte Terminillo I/LZ-305 2217m. in classic winter mode using ice ax and crampons. We left Rome early and in about an hour and a half by car we reached the Sebastiani refuge from where the path to Terminillo starts. The choice was to climb a “couloir” in winter style which allows you to climb directly to the top in a very easy way. At the start the climate was bad, cold and low clouds that did not allow us to see the mountain. We set off following other groups of climbers who were approaching the wall to be climbed.

Because of the fog it wasn’t easy to find the route but in the end we found the right couloir and in about an hour and a half we climbed to the summit. At the top there was a splendid sun and a freezing and very strong wind and it was not easy to mount my 5m fishing rod antenna.

I used the ice ax as a base and in the end the antenna was mounted, I launched a cq Sota on the 20m SSB band and quickly made 10 qsos. Thanks to @IN3ADF and @IK2LEY for the S2S qso.

Unfortunately it was too cold at the top and I didn’t want to freeze my two friends so I said a “Sorry guys qrt” and I disassembled everything and we descended towards the valley by the same route as the climb. It was 11.30 and the snow was starting to melt and it wasn’t easy to get off. . Arrived at the refuge we drank an ice cold beer it was the perfect end to this fantastic day in the mountains!

Andrea,

Thanks for the great report and stunning photos. I never get to explore the region in winter/spring so it’s always interesting to see where you get to escape to at the weekends away from Rome.

Un abbraccio
