A big thank-you to all who took the time to reply to my questions… The result was out of 8 comments…the yaesu FT857 came out the most popular over the icom706.It is now just a case of find a mint one for a good price!

One comment about that, Malc: You will find them second-hand from the big dealers for typically about £389, with a three month warrenty. I don’t think this is a bargain, second-hand goods don’t attract VAT, if you add VAT at the standard rate to that you arrive at £457 but you can get a new one with a 12 month warranty for £439!
