So would I. Straight line distance is a simple and obvious concept and easy to estimate and if necessary measure. All of this horizontal and vertical stuff seems to add needless complexity. But presumably whoever wrote it had something in mind that they wanted to achieve, even if what they actually said ended up having unintended consequences.
Hello All
Yesterday, Sunday 4th January, Dave G3TQQ and I operated from the trig point on Penyghent for those that are interested in this award.

G/TW-003 Gisborough Moor also has a trig point, not on the summit but within the activation zone at NZ623138 (324m). This one is very easy to access from Hutton Village and the forest tracks.

I thought the WAB trig activations might make a nice addition to SOTA and /P operating especially as I have to travel so far to reach more than one SOTA Summit. However, as I start researching which trigs are valid to activate Iām realising the vast majority seem to be on private land which introduces the headache of locating and contacting an owner for access permission.
As this can also be an issue for SOTA (more rarely) how does one go about locating a land owner?
Michael (G0POT)
Set up an antenna system and they will soon come and introduce themselvesā¦
Years ago I worked in site acquisition for a mobile phone network and I found there is often no easy way to find who owns a particular piece of land. Lots of farm land is not owned by the person who farms it, making matters even more complicated.
In my opinion, the trig point award is much more likely to bring activators into conflict with land owners than SOTA due to the distribution of trig points and particularly as they seek to ensure that activators are always very close to the trig point.
I had the same idea as you, did the same research and came to the same conclusion.
That being said, this site might help:
Thanks to activators who indicate the TPxxxx in their alerts. Most recent Allan GW4VPX/P & M0OAT/P today. Good stuff.
Mike
already in log
Mike,
Sorry, but I will not be putting TP numbers on my alerts. I did consider joining the TP scheme but decided against.
One reason I am not participating is that I normally avoid setting up near the trig, especially on HF, because I think other walkers are entitled to a bit of peace and quiet on their chosen summit. If I need the height and/or takeoff for VHF I might be close to the trig but not if the summit shape permits a good position elsewhere within the SOTA AZ.
Thanks for contacts today, both from a point well away from the TP.

Rod
Hi Rod
Thanks for the contact and the s2s today with you and Viki. As SOTA activators we all have our own agendas and āmodus operandiā when activating and I hope everyone will respect that. My main aim today was to pick up some winter bonus points, make sure of an s2s with you both and let the SOTA chasers have some useful points. I also took the opportunity of giving WAB Trig chasers the chance of ācollecting the trigā which is so very close to the cairn on Pen y Garn hence the reason why I notified this in my Alert.
Thanks to everyone who contacted me with 51contacts logged on 40m, 4 on 2m VHF and 2 s2s.

What he says!
Hello Rod,
Thanks for the summits today. Fine about TP.
If you looked at the garage and attics here you will soon see I collect all sorts of things
Night night
Mike
I remember stopping overnight in a similar structure on Cadair Idris many years ago when I was in the Venture Scouts. I donāt think overnight sleeping is encouraged but this was the 1970s and I donāt remember any problems with Rangers back in those days.
Regarding the WAB Trig Point Award
will some SOTA activators be startled if they get a run of ānot requiredā when being passed down the list ?
Iām used to this and fully accept it when activating Areas for WAB but if Iāve carried a load of gear to a remote Trig Point I think I would request to work everyone on the net .
just an observation
Happy Trigging

Iāve updated the WAB <> SOTA summit list at:
http://www.sotadata.org.uk/SOTA_WABTRIG.csv
Thanks to Peter G1FOA for the corrections.
Aled, yes I understand what youāre saying, but to what end? I dare say that you already aware of this from what you say in your text. I do a lot of activation within WAB and for a station to pass it straight on without making, what to them is an unnecessary contact, allows me as the activator to move on more quickly. The activator is not going to get any extra points for working more stations, so they are not missing out in that respect.
Not all collect trig points and they may have already worked that square. They are simply trying not to hold you up any longer than needs be.
I look upon ānot requiredā as āthank you for your efforts, but in this instance I have already worked what Iām collecting, I shall therefore hand you over to the next station without undue delayā. Thatās allows me, to get out of that dodgy spot Iām parked in, or off that island before the tide comes in, ASAP!

Hi All,
Came across the discussion and not sure if this has been mentioned previously. Just a note I believe the WAB trig points for the award are only the Pillar types. So for example Winter Hill G/SP-010 is a block type and therefore not applicable
Spreadsheets are available http://wab.intermip.net/Data/Trig%20Points%20Tracker.zip which include some SOTA references

Looking at the WAB tigpoint tracker, TP0701 Rivington is valid for the WAB award and also appears to be in the AZ for Winter Hill.
Thanks for the observation Steve,
Well beggar me, I looked for Winter Hill on trigpoints but alas did not investigate further once I saw
Turns out the Winter Hill I have known all of my 66 years as a Lancastrian is an impostor. Actual Winter hill is a pimple near Tockholes.
Glad I am focusing on SOTA rather than trig point activations. I activated G/SP-015, 013 and 004 (all have trig points) on Saturday. Only one G station all day. Previously tried to activate the trig on Moel Morfydd not even one contact, but a great days hiking :~))
I tend to activate SOTA summits as my main objective and if the trigpoint ends up being in the AZ then all the better.
I must have been busy this year as Iāve activated 30 TPs on HF and 16 on VHF. Certainly adds a bit of extra spice to portable operating in the great outdoors.
