VK2 activation seeking EU S2S Sunday 9th March

I’m planning to activate Bowning Hill VK2/ST-042 on Sunday 9th March from about 0700 on 14 MHz CW and SSB. Particularly interested in S2S but happy to provide this summit to as many chasers as possible.
Power 10w, IC703, 1/4 wave vertical antenna, as used in recent activations. Recent tests have indicated this works well when conditions are good.

Hello Andrew, will listen out.
Good luck.

Hi Andrew!

I will be in Jyranvuori (OH/JS-066) at 07.00 UTC. I am using 10W (Juma TRX2) and link dipole. My idea is warm up first with cw on 14 MHz and later move to SSB. Depending on the amount of chasers later I am going to make my first qsos on 28 MHz. But, but let see what will happen in the summit!

If you don’t hear my call the reason is that “big guns” have walked over me. But let’s be persistent! My idea is stay on air roughly three hours if everything goes well.

Hi Saku,

Understand your plan, I will look out for you. Will be happy to work you on either cw or ssb.

Mike,
Let’s hope for conditions similar to the last few days.

In reply to VK1DA:

The activation of Bowning Hill VK2/ST-042 went well with many contacts made by both Andrew VK1NAM and me.

My log shows 15 contacts on cw and 10 on ssb. VK1NAM would have similar numbers on phone on 20m plus a number on 40m. One of his contacts on 20m Ssb was a US home station.

One of the experiments we did was to use the IC703 and switch between the quarter wave vertical with 3 radials and a 20m dipole, part of a linked dipole. When the linked dipole was oriented to minimse wind pressure it was unfortunately end on to EU and it was somewhat below the signal level we had with the vertical. WIth the dipole rotated so it was broadside to EU the signal reports were similar to the vertical. With a VK6 the dipole was better than the vertical. Comparing antennas is something I like to do and as we both had our antennas there, it made sense to compare them.

Many thanks to the chasers who gave us our contacts, gave us reports on the antennas and probably chased away some QRM. And thanks to Andrew VK1NAM for joining in the activation and providing good company on the walk/climb, the setup and the return trip after dark, lit by LED headlamps.

Hi Andrew!

We did not get qso this time. I listened you roughly by 41-42 on 14 MHz SSB at 09.10 UTC and called also but without success.

I worked at first on 14 MHz with cw and ssb. Interesting finding was that my rig stopped sending couple of time with ssb. So far I have worked 99% of qsos on cw and this kind of problem has been theory for me. I was wondering it but at home I remarked that there is a bug in software of Juma TRX2 (answer found from Juma pages) and I must upgrade it for next time.

I made quick and dirty dipole for 24 MHz on Summit and operated first time on 24 MHz. The second qso on ssb was with Matt VK2DAG by 59. He signal was so strong and clearly that I needed to turn my head from left to right for ensuring that we was not sitting beside me! This was third qso with Matt from Jyranvuori (OH/JS-066) and first ssb qso with him. Distance is almost 15.000 km. I think it is not bad achievement to get so long qso with 10 W – I am more than happy!

Hi Saku,
I am sorry conditions did not allow the contact. I think we may have worked on CW but perhaps we needed to be on air earlier. Sunday is a noisy day on 20m.
I will try to set up a better antenna on 12m as Matt VK2DAG has pointed out how well it is working, so perhaps that is the band to go for when the MUF is up so high. Hope to work more dx this coming weekend 15/16 March from VK1/AC-008.

Yeah after about 9pm local till past 1am Andrew. They be like flys on ya on 12m!

With how good 12m is at the moment I am catching about five or more summits a night.

Thanks for the enjoyable chat today, Matt. The 12m band was okay between VK and G, but it refused to open into North America. I managed to worked a few of the NA regulars on 17m, with Gerard VK2IO also making the trip.

Not until 1401z did I have the first 12m NA chaser in the log!

That’s disturbing Andy! I wait till the logs match then I go looking for busted calls. Fact of life. Some of those aren’t right as I’ve only been chasing SOTAs since September. And my first DX was DF2GN/P on the 30th.

And I was lurking on 17m listening to you Mike. Heard you work Gerard. I had trouble getting OE9HRV attention on 12m at 13:30z as he was working tons of NA stations, and I could just hear some of the NAs.

12m has been great lately. But the downside is 80m has been shocking. “Swings and round-a-bouts”.

Matt
