The second one of those three was a first activation and the highest of the 3.
A 10-pointer at 3331m (that’s 10928 feet) that in mid August with a weak winter season made it relatively easy from a technical point of view. All the snow on the ridge was gone. Early in summer things are quite a bit different from what I have seen in hiking reports and videos. https://sotl.as/summits/OE/KT-004
Here my video:
Great weather conditions and a lot of QSO including 2m FM S2S to OE2, OE5, OE7, DL and Italy. I hope you enjoy the views from the ridge down to glaciers and up the the Großglockner OE/KT-001, highest summit in OE.
Hallo Joe,
beeindruckende Bilder! Congrats zur ersten Aktivierung unter diesen condx.
Wenig später war ich auf KT-008 und weiß die wunderschöne Landschaft zu schätzen!
Beste 73 und viel Glück in der Zukunft!

Vielen Dank dafür. Ein Traumtag vom Wetter her.
Ich habe deinen Spot auf 2m FM gesehen vom Ankogel und ware eigentlich in der Nähe (auf OE/SB-354Speiereck ) gewesen für ein S2S. Leider nichts von dir gehört…
Joe, thank you for the colorful film about your next activation in the Austrian Alps! The views of the mountainous terrain from your film reminded me of the mountaineering routes I traveled in the 80s in the Caucasus. The difference is that when approaching the beginning of the route we walked along glaciers and there were no paths with metal railings.
I can imagine the adventure traversing a glacier and maybe finding a new own route. That is real mountaineering. I highly admire mountaineers that go on expeditions on unknown trails.
As written the conditions have been very much in my favour. This route is hiked by a lot of people in summertime. Still mistakes will very likely end fatal.
The Großglockner high alpine road, from were the hike starts, was specificly created to make access to the alpine regions better and bring tourism to poor rural areas. Now it is a mayor touristic spot. In the European Alps just so many people and initiative have been building and improving routes since more than 200 years.
I am fully aware of that advantage but it gives me a chance to refine and improve my skills with every hike.
If I get the chance I would like to experience this or a similar hike in early summer with residual snow.
And the glacier crossing to the Johannisberg OE/KT-002 is planned for next year if COV-19 allows. There are no metal railings available there
