VHF chasing rig with remote capability

Why do I fear this conversation will be end up like Jethro Clampitt explaining the telephone to Jed and Granny Clampitt when they want to call Cousin Pearl.

Yeah, that’s me. My wife knows all the lyrics and sings The Beverly Hillbillies theme song with gusto, not to mention a thousand other songs from our youth that I can barely remember.

This is both a hardware and software solution @G8CPZ - and the hardware is hundreds of pounds.

had a look at UK retailers Ed and it is listed as discontinued with them, which is a shame, as it looks like a fairly unique product to me.

Oh dear. That rules that option out.

Sounds like a great excuse to buy an IC9700/IC705 for the shack and connect to it using wfview.

RCForb will work with your rigs but the rig has to be cabled to a PC with RcForb Server software installed (not a Raspberry Pi - only Windows supported), that PC then puts the secure “gateway” to your radio onto the Internet and then you need a second Windows PC with RCForb Client to access that gateway. The “link address” to your radio’s PC is stored at the remotehams.com server. - I think using Remotehams, takes care of the routing through your router/firewall as long as you are not “double NATted” by your ISP.

Full details at Remotehams.com.

There is also an Android RCForb Client App, but that costs €9.99 from the Google App store - the Windows software is free, but remotehams welcome contributions if you want to throw them a few pounds if you like what you find.

I don’t know about the UK resellers however when I do a search here, I get lots of suppliers with prices from €110 to €180. I suspect they are all out of China.

Buying another PC for this is not an option. Does anyone know if the RCForb client software is available for iPhone or Android?

OK, so install RCForb Server on your W10 laptop and leave it cabled to and sitting next to the FT857D in the outside shack (you will need either a cable set or an interface box between the PC and radio for cat controls and audio) - there was a company in Glasgow who used to produce these at reasonable prices.

Then install the RcForb Android app on your Android phone and use that to access from your house.

If you move away from Remotehams, there are other options such as RemoteRxTx, which is an Android App and a Java app “Jarec” for the PC. I’m sure there are other options. It depends how much you want a turn-key (read more expensive) solution or one you are willing to put together yourself, just with community help.

I chased Dave @M0JKS who was on Loughrigg G/LD-047 this afternoon using my IC-705 remotely via the wfview software installed on my laptop and it worked flawlessly, so that is definitely a setup I will keep running moving forward.

Thanks for all the replies, I’m sure they haven’t just been of use to me, even though I had everything I needed here already! Just proves the versatility of the IC-705, once again!

Thanks for the QSO mark, the only one on 2m. To get the four, I was forced to setup the HF antenna - something my fingers will not forgive me for…

Well done Mark, always better to use what you already have rather than start down the worm-hole of alternatives!

Actually it’s just pushing the N+1 button.

You have an IC-705 that you have now setup for remote control. For a while you’ll disconnect it and pack it for SOTA use. But I know, you know and everybody else knows that you will soon be buying another 705 so you have one for the remote setup and one for SOTA. You can justify this on the grounds the repeated connecting and disconnecting will place undue wear on the sockets

Maybe an IC-9700
