Upper Park GW/MW-032

Hi Jimmy,
Phil was teaching antenna theory to a group of new amateurs who were doing their foundation course with the HARS. He was sorry to miss it and hopefully he will get it next year.

Hi Gillian,

I am sure Phil G4HQB was have been gutted to miss out, but I understand that he was committed to teaching a Foundation Course that day. Looks like he’ll get the opportunity in the future though.

Quite sure I saw John Terry in full Chelsea kit with a backpack on, running across the AZ holding 5 MG trophies aloft.

Hi Jimmy

I have two summits to activate and only one left to chase to " complete" all GW

Blimey, that was like a who’s who for recent UK SOTA, clearly lots of you descend on the Lake District for the LD weekend given how many callsigns and faces I recognised.

Nice to get some charity in there and everyone happy who got to go.

Regards, Mark.

Jimmy, I think you have overlooked Rhinog Fach,NW-078, which was promoted the week after I completed NW. So I had completed NW and have completed SW and MW so still have one activation, NW-078 to do for full completion of GW. Vicki still has two to activate - NW-006 and NW-078.

Following the posts by Carolyn @G6WRW and Rod @M0JLA in response to my post, I can see that I did overlook a few things and therefore I decided to delete my post. However I hope I now have the below correct.

I can see from the recent Upper Park GW/MW-032 activation that Gerald @G4OIG, Paul @G4MD and Neil @G0WPO have now activated all SOTA summits in GW.

I can see also from this that Mike @G0HIO and Rod M0JLA just needs to activate Rhinog Fach GW/NW-078 to activate all GW SOTA summits, Jordan @M3TMX just needs to activate Mynydd Enlli GW/NW-072 and Mynydd Anelog GW/NW-077 to activate all GW SOTA summits, Carolyn G6WRW just needs to activate Myarth GW/SW-035 (permission for this one is much easier to get than of Upper Park GW/MW-032) and Rhinog Fach GW/NW-078 to activate all GW SOTA summits and Vicki @M6BWA just needs to activate Tryfan GW/NW-006 and Rhinog Fach GW/NW-078 to activate all GW SOTA summits. This means also that both Carolyn G6WRW and Vicki M6BWA both have potential to be the first female SOTA activator to activate all GW SOTA summits.

Interestingly also the first 2 SOTA activators to activate all GW summits were originally John @GW4BVE and Richard @G3CWI respectively. However neither of them have activated Rhinog Fach GW/NW-078 yet and not sure if they plan to activate this SOTA summit in order to make sure that they’ve activated all GW SOTA summits once again. You may ask why no SOTA activation is logged for Richard G3CWI for Mynydd Anelog GW/NW-077, this is because he activate this summit, but after he stopped submitting this activation logs to the SOTA Database. When Rhinog Fach GW/NW-078 was added, my dad Tom M1EYP was then the first to activate all GW SOTA summits and this was shortly followed by myself.

Guiding offer still stands… I’ve had a few happy customers for the “least possible scrambling exposure” route.

Is there room for +1 Gerald?

Happy to help. Just with you or in combination with up to 4. I prefer to keep a small ratio on Tryfan.

I’ll send you a PM

Id be tempted! Often found its easier to ask forgiveness than permission… and as a retired “urban explorer” trespass is my middle name! keep it discreet and peaceful, who’s going to know??

I have NEVER understood landowners behaving like they do, like you say, charge for a parking spot, charge for a brew, you could even charge for an access permit! Its high time england and wales came into line with Scotland… there is no need for it!

That said, id be interested in a “permission trip” if another was arranged, get it done and move on then!

Cheers - Alan

Indeed it might be, but in this instance it would only work against us. Now we have a process for obtaining consent, there is absolutely no need to “wing it”.

It is up to the Estate as to who and what they allow on their land. While I agree with your sentiments about access in England and Wales relative to what is allowed in Scotland, we have to live with what we have got. There are only 2 summits in Wales that require permission and 2 in England. There are means of gaining permission to access all 4 and we should take advantage of those means.

Absolutely correct. Specifically, while the conversation asking for forgiveness might clear the way to logging a valid activation for the individual personally, it would always invoke the significant risk of blanket ban for all future SOTA activators.

So requesting permission is the only considerate way to go - considerate to the landowner, but moreover, considerate to other participants in the SOTA programme.

Like Gerald says, there’s four summits across G and GW where this applies, and all can be legitimately accessed with the correct approach.

Interesting to note that there is at least one summit in Scotland where permission is required…

Permission to operate is a whole different can of worms from permission to access.

Absolutely. And SOTA General Rule 3.7 applies

“All Expeditions must use legitimate access routes and comply with any local rules regarding
use of the land. In particular, Activators must ensure that they have any necessary permission
to operate from their chosen Summit, or that access is customary.”

To do otherwise risks bringing SOTA into disrepute.

Actions we’ll take for that range from a talking to accompanied by a Paddington Hard Stare to banning you from taking part in SOTA.

I completely agree, i was merely pointing out that it happens, and can be easier!

Its no big deal to me, i can be patient if the “group trip” is going to be the way! I wouldn’t want to to make life difficult for others if that was the case…

Cheers - Alan
