Trx Kit for a new challenge?

Thinking more upmarket, has anybody tried the KN-Q7A? CW/SSB on 20 and 40 tuned by rubber crystal.

Hi Brian,
I think a couple have built them in VK. Original VXO covers 20 kHz and drifts slightly, but we are picky these days. Otherwise owners are very happy.
I saw one last year where a digital VFO and readout had been squeezed into the case to make it more versatile.
Costs more than $10 but reasonable value.

For the non-mike brigade look at the Cyclone100. Consider using Xtal instead of original VFO as that does drift in the first 30 minutes.
Again more than $10 but much better than the Rockmite.

Do you have a link for the Cyclone 100 Ron? I googled a bit without success.

PS Maybe it was a 4SQRP Cyclone?

Sorry folks,

It is a Cyclone40. It was the winner of a contest to build a rig with less than 100 components. I transposed the numbers. See at

It’s the standard design for these minimal rigs these days, RX mixer, Xatl filter, demodulator, audio. Tx design varies from SSB to CW, but pretty basic. This one has a Class D final so good efficiency. Fitted with a stable VFO it would be a good SOTA rig.
