Thanks for all infos, it is helpful.
I will bring my FT5DE, and try relays. I may talk to some of you.
My motorhome is 6.5 m long, about 3 m high, and the width is more than a standard car. So I expect some difficulties with small roads. However I will also have my electrical bicycle, so parking in a large place, and exploring by bicycle is an option.
Armin, I think I will be in the south EI when you will be north…so ground wave will likely not be possible. May be qso on HF. Enjoy your trip.
I will add you to HAM Alert so. Also, if you do pay your respects to the Sugar Loaf, you don’t have to drive in to the car park using the arch. There is another entry point next to it but it may be blocked by strategically placed rocks. I’ve not paid a visit in a while so am unsure if the rocks are still there.
Also have a look at Kilmashogue Forest car park and go and do Ticknock. That is right next door to the Three Rock repeater so you might want a 2m and 70cm band pass filter there.
Catch Ticknock on a good day and the views are sensational. I did a trail run there recently and done all the summit points, there is three, hence the name (i think). If you have an MTB there are proper, marked out trails for MTB’s to race down. Also a lovely forest to walk or run through too. Well worth a visit if you get a chance.
I’ve put in some links below to the three sites which all interconnect.
Thanks for the additional information. I will arrive at Cork, May 18, morning, going west, touring the island clockwise, and leave from Rosslare, June 24,. I will operate as EI/ F5MOG/P, or GI/ when in the north.
I have an FT5DE for 2m/70 cm, only with the rubber antenna. For HF, the rig is KX2, with efhw 10/20/40, or efhw 17/30. or JPC12, or LW.
For HF, only CW.
The objective is holidays, visit, occasionally radio.73 de Pierre F5MOG.
The ground wave thing is going to be rather difficult.
Today on EI/IS-092, I tried to listen to EI6IRB on EI/IS-068… but something must have been blocking the signal… even though it was only few more than 100km away, I didn’t hear anything from him.
So maybe the 40m band remains…
73 Armin
PS. The street up to the parking for EI/IS-092 ist ok with a camper … and the parking is large.
I’ll do a few more summits in EI and then post photos and parking recommendations on sotl.as.
Today I was on EI/IS-100…you might also find a spot for your camper nearby.
Just enter my call there and you’ll see where I was and find information about the summits… maybe that will help you.
The UK authority, Ofcom, has made the RSL, the regional secondary locator that designates Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland etc. optional FOR UK LICENSES ONLY. However, the prefix used for CEPT operation is in the CEPT document which has not been changed and so for Northern Ireland operation under CEPT rules means you start the call with MI/
I’ll repeat what many have said that dropping the RSL is OK if you want but then people don’t know which DXCC country you are operating.from and you become just another UK station and not something moderately rare as a MU/MJ/MD station.
