Top Mountain Foods

My go-to recently has been a diced small white onion, a jalapino or two, some Ro-tel, and ground beef. After cooking everything down in a cast iron it goes into a small Thermos which has a built in spoon. Stays hot all day, soooo good on a cold, windy summit.

Preparing this takes time though, so if I’m rushing myself to get out the door I’ll stop at a local taquería and grab a bean + cheese burrito to enjoy at the top. These never stay warm though, but beans and cheese are okay cold with a liberal application of hot sauce. Additionally, any other ingredient with high water content, like tomato or lettuce tend to wreck the tortilla if not consumed immediately.

Yuk! but most ot the items mentioned above sound (or are) disgusting - or are on my banned list (sugar and substitutes, dairy (goodbye chocolate…), pork, orange and a ragbag of other flavours). My emergency food is a ‘Nakd’ cashew cereal bar. Don’t get excited and ask to look at the wrapper. ‘Nakd’ referes to the fact that no sugar is included and the ingredients are stated as: Cashew - 51%, Date 49% AND nothing - that’s it! There is a range of other flavours - blueberry muffin, banoffee, salted caramel, peanut etc but not keen on most of them. These ‘healthy’ bars are more available than they used to be but the cashew one is difficult to find so I normally buy online.
Those who know their Walker’s shortbread will know that it is made in Aberlour, Speyside (amongst the distilleries) and there is a factory shop and it is not quite conicidence that we have just returned from a repeat visit to a house within a mile of the factory. Having eaten some of my specialist food, during the trip, the car was even more heavily laden with quantities of the stuff (M0JLA strongly recommends the stem ginger flavour - at £2.80 for 500g I believe - while I return with presents and thank you gifts.) Oh he also smuggled in a Scottish taste of Covid which isn’t quite so enjoyable.

I’m actually more curious what kind of harpsichord you take up the summit? An ottavino would be the obvious QRP option.

Then again maybe you go full QRO and wheel up a double-manual Ruckers?

I usually have a small ziplock bag of what we call “Studentenfutter” (student’s food): dried berries (mostly raisin) and nuts. Quite nourishing, gives that satisfying crunchy feeling and stays eatable for a long time.

    (Has never come back empty, even after a weekend of activating).

I found Walkers at import grocery store in JA.
Next activation, I’m gonna bring it!!

Usually, I have rice crakers, chocolate bars for hiking.
