The Vintage Electric Handbag Fun Event (Part 1)

I used to operate an Ascot SE550 on some summits before I bought a Wouxun KG-699E. The power was useful with some good distances worked, but like all mobiles, it did consume batteries rather quickly.

My 1983 vintage Trio TS-130V fits the bill. At 4.9kg it is quite a reasonable weight… however, I’m sure some would beg to differ.

That would be the issue, the FM1000s are quite “needy” when it comes to the angry pixies! due to needing the big batteries it would have to be a simle summit like Gun moor, or Billinge!

Alan

I took the Ascom up several SP summits including Shining Tor. I recall using 3300mAH SLABs which were absolutely useless. Getting 3S 4000mAH LiPOs in 2009 was a revelation, but to run the Ascom I needed to add a 10000mAH NiMH to boost the voltage, a system I used to power the FT-857D for a few years. Now LiFePO4 batteries make it all so much easier.

Right. Time to make this thing happen. I’ve made a shoddily put together AI-generated poster (hence the wonky car and the weird picnic table legs, but it’ll do!

Time to get organising!

Is that a 2 over 2 VHF array

Right, I’m ready with my latest masterpiece… plugs into the FT290R / FT790R mic socket and allows me to switch PTT (when using CW), take audio out to headphones / audio recorder, and step up / down the frequency.

So when is the VEHFE? Perhaps on a 144MHz Backpackers contest day?

Might have to try it out on a local SOTA activation first!

The ‘Adiemod Turbo 6000: Championship Edition’? :star_struck:

I love it. I want to make one. It’s like an Adiemod Turbo 6000 on steroids!

…I’ve also had an idea how to make it look utterly BIBLICAL with just one little tweak, and I have the parts in my spares tub! I need to make this. BoM?

Looking forward to seeing your ChampionshipXL edition!

I might make another Adiemod Turbo 6000 but with the parts I have it will only be an Adiemod Turbo 6000 Deluxe.

If I can build what you’ve made and add the little extra ‘chambourcy nouvelle’ that I have in mind to add a little ‘boulangerie sportif sur le plage’ to your design, then we might have the Adiemod Turbo 6000: Executive Edition Ghia soon! :star_struck:

That would definitely be a thing of beauty. Will it have a go-faster stripe?

It’s an Adiemod Turbo 6000: Executive Edition Ghia, not a Ford Capri.

Fair point.

I see the FT-290R thread is closed. A dark day on the legacy of a great radio. :sob:

Oh well never mind! So I’m guessing you have your Adiemod wired so the rocker switch is just on or off, same as the original version, but where did you wire to on the mic pin out to control that like the Stand By input? The PTT?

I assume for the up/down buttons you just have those wired to each pin for up and down? I’m flummoxed (great word, I need to use it more often) by how you got the audio out and the key in though. Also, what seals are those at the inputs, little rubber grommets glued on?

I’m about to order the parts for my Deluxe Edition. I’m not brave enough yet to make the Executive Edition Ghia as I don’t know how you wired it up, or what AWG type wire used for the mic connector etc.

The Ghia Edition will happen though, when I am brave enough!

I’ve got the car covered, I just need the handbag! (Unless a 25 year old FT-817 counts?)

Nice! Did you get the wood all redone? I need to get myself an Allegro in dysentery brown, or maybe the Allegro Estate?

Have the parts ordered for the Executive Edition. I need to find out what that 7 pin connector is and get some other bits too for the up down buttons. Did you use 7 strands of wire or buy a 7 strand cable and hack it up?

Had an idea too. How about packing in a keyer with key in/out jacks so the Adiemod becomes an all in one unit and can also save adding a Picokeyer etc in the chain if you want to use a paddle or bug?

I also ordered some parts for the Executive Edition Ghia, but not everything. Exciting times! Completely over the top and unnecessary but still fun!

Let me get this straight after 9 or so posts on a PTT switch. You have replaced the three buttons already in the microphone with switches in a box. So that’s extra weight to be carried up the hill in addition to the microphone already being carried. And, when you want to switch between modes you disconnect the mic and plug in the switches which mimic what you already had with you.

Ah but the add on switch is latching so the rig stays in transmit. Or you use modify lock switch already fitted in the standard 290 YM-47 mic to provide latching PTT. That mod requires a track cut i and 2cm of wire added in the mic. I do get the feeling the river is being lowered rather than raising the bridge.

Don’t forget the part when you finally finish getting everything set up, noone is even on 144.050 to use it.

I like it, it’s elaborate and totally over the top. If Begali made Yaesu FT-290R Stand By cables…

The Begali Stradavarius Ghia!

Apart from my Icom IC12, all I can muster up is one of these. The 700G is sans transformer, so therefore SOTA ready at 9 Kg, but needs a little TLC especially on FM. Neither would be a problem on Rombalds Moor, but G4TGJ might shoo me away.

I’m considering re-purchasing the first (amateur) radio I ever owned (with transmit capability) just for such events. A Yaesu FT-203 handheld.

There is one available, for a reasonable price but my only trepidation is that I still have the scars from the thumbwheel style of frequency changing. Those cogged wheels were very nasty.

The Mk1 290 I have is 3kc off frequency, probably not a big issue on FM but a bit of faff on SSB and my only other option is the FT-736 and 70cm doesn’t transmit anymore. This is in addition to the fact that requiring a low loader to get the thing to a summit would render the activation invalid.
