Hi all, please find a small video from our journey up to the Lake District last weekend to join in with the S2S action and meet some great activators and chasers in person
Thank you to everyone who called into me from this great SOTA community - I hope you enjoy!
Great video Ben and has someone got a new drone or is Martha very tall nowadays! Oh and Iām very disappointed as you know the only way to go is Chicken and Mushroom pot noodle!
Great fun to watch. Presumably drones are legal in the Lake District National Park. Iām reasonably sure its a huge no no here in a US NP such as Yosemite. Think they got banned after one crashed into an iconic geyser in Yellowstone NP.
Many summits are accompanied by the faint buzzing noise of a drone these days. I wonder when the first near miss between a drone and a low flying military aircraft will be?
Lovely video Ben. We couldnāt have asked for better weather. Looking at your āpackā reminds me of how my first ascents were achieved . My parents were fortunate to have lots of friends who were happy to share the load!
Best wishes,
Thanks Paul - yes, I read all the rules and regs before taking it out. We are very lucky around G and GW land that we can fly one, although this one is only 249g, very light and small! As long as your not flying it right by someone and out of reach so you donāt lose control, its ok. I made sure I asked everyone around me before flying it over the weekend, most people were like āyes go for itā, and they asked me to take some images of them to email over
Thanks Andy - also a big āCongratulationsā is in order well done for hitting your 1000 point goal over the weekend, you Mountain Goat! O yes, my pack weighed over 25kg which included radio equipment, water, clothes and little Lyra - sheās getting heavier!! Itās all good fun though and keeps me fit! Was great to meet in person Saturday evening, hope we can do it again soon!
Great video Ben ⦠& Lyra seemed to enjoy it too!
I was up on Beacon Batch (G/SC-003) last Sat morning and QSYād to your freq when I saw your spot but unfortunately I couldnāt hear you. In fact, I only managed 2 G/LDās that day with GQ0WPO/P & G4IPB/P on 40m.
We have much to thank our forefathers for their campaigning in the 1930s and beyond for getting us access (eventually) to the majority of upland areas in England and Wales, plus pretty much everywhere non urban in Scotland.
National Parks in the UK are primarily Planning control bodies as the majority of the actual land inside a national park is privately owned.
The Civil Aviation Authority (equivalent of FAA in the USA) are also trying to regulate UAVs based on actual risk to persons/animals property instead of blanket bans. The āunder 250gramā class is a case in point. Very light touch with some simple online training and a drone registration system so they can be traced.
The guidance from the Lake District National Park is āDrone operators must have permission from the owner of the land where a drone takes off and landsā. A fair amount of land (including Scafell Pike) is owned by the National Trust. They publish the following.
Thanks Lea - little Lyra loves her days out in the mountains Sorry I missed you from Beacon Batch, something must of been in our way as I had the slim-g up high. Look forward to making a S2S contact soon buddy!
Over the weekend including Friday I got 8 LD chases on 40m and 5 on 60m. Unfortunately LD is too far away for VHF FM, it must have been fun hearing all the 2m activity for those close enough!
