My best DX operating as G0LGS/P in my usual spot is OE5VRL/5 in JN78DK
at 1222Km closely followed by OE5XBL in JN68PC at 1171Km some 20
minutes later (27/12/2006).
Was that on 70cm or on 2m? If 70cm, it was a veritable achievement!
I think I could do with a pre-amp too.
I heard G6LLX saying that too, on Tuesday evening. I don’t think I need a preamp. My FT-817 receiver seems very sensitive on all bands. I did actually hear a couple of PA stations on Tuesday, but no DLs. I also heard GM4JTJ in IO86 square. but I had no chance of working him with 5 watts.
I was intending to get on from a local ripple this month, but realised I hadn’t sorted out my kit from the last round of summits, so that took precedence. You see, SOTA wins every time!

70cm
Very good! The farthest I have ever worked on 70cm tropo was HB9. However, that was from IO71 square, so I guess that’s about the same distance as OE is from the Eastern side of IO81.
I think Reg, GW8VHI, still holds the European 70cm tropo record for working the Canary Islands from Port Talbot (IO81) in about 1984. I heard both sides of the QSO but I failed to get through to the EA8. (I did work him about an hour earlier on 2m).
