I did my first activation today. It was quite a learning experience and very difficult.
I was in the sun with untested antennas and it was quite a challenge to setup everything
and hear stations on 18 mhz cw. thanks to everyone who put with my agn amd agn etc.
I could not see the keboard entries I was typing.

Nice to work you Richard! Hope to see you again on the bands! You may like to join the SOTA North America yahoo group: nasota@yahoogroups.com
BTW, I too found my first HF activation much harder than I expected. The second was much easier!

Most people do Hal! It seems so easy in theory…

Congrats Richard and thanks for the qso! I recommend logging with paper in the field. With experience, setup will get easier and you’ll figure out what works and what doesn’t.

Yeah. My first HF activation attempt ended up with a broken antenna before I even found a frequency to call CQ. Lesson learned? Use guy lines on anything vertical, 'cos it will be windy! Second and third attempts were progressively easier. Then at the fourth it all came crashing down, and I broke my car as well. Lessons learned that time? Park the car in the open, and avoid thundery weather and mobile phone masts…
73 and good luck on the next one, Rick M0LEP
