Surprising things that can happen

I was out on my birthday meal with the family this evening, when my Samsung Galaxy Siii phone pinged a bell sound at me. This indicated an incoming email.

This was from a chap who reminded me he had met me up The Cloud last month. We had walked up together and chatted about his photography and my radio stuff. When I erected the 12m GP antenna, he was really interested in it and asked if it could be included in one of his photos - “Because I’ve never seen anything like that on a hill before”!

He also asked a young couple who were stood on the big rock admiring the view, as he thought that had photographic potential. All in all, he must have been on summit for about an hour composing and shooting his photographs. Prior to descending, he made a note of my email, and then, aside from mentioning it in my activation report, I forgot about the whole thing!

Well these photos arrived and they were stunning. So much so that my phone did several circuits of the table at the pub as my mum, brother and wife were as impressed as I was at the pictures.

I have now uploaded these onto my website so that everyone can enjoy them. Go to http://tomread.co.uk and click on the ‘SOTA’ index, and obviously then on SP-015 The Cloud. The photos are someway down the page, with the activation report of 21st June 2013.

I thought the photos were really great and creative, and a real surprise birthday present!

Go to Tom’s webpage and click on SOTA and SP-015 The Cloud to get to the page. Then search for "“Friday 21st June 2013” and the pictures follow.

I was out on Cleeve Hill on the same evening, and wanted to set up at the ‘lone tree’ as it has a convenient seat and is easy to attach the mast. However a photographer was taking some care to frame it with the setting sun behind and I didn’t want to spoil his shot. However, he looked as though he would be there some time, so I asked if he minded if I carried on. No problem, and we had quite a chat about what I was doing. He then asked if he could include my setup in the shot, which he did as I was setting up. I intended to ask him to send me a copy, but he disappeared while I was making a contact. Aghhh! I doubly kick myself now.
