SPRING GM/ES Activity Day - 6 March 2026

First one off the hill tomorrow, grab the big table in The Bothy, Braemar. Everyone usually arrives in dribs and drabs, so just order your food as you arrive. 1pm is the “official” time.

The “Southern Chapter” or “Pentlands Posse” from Allermuir GM/SS-171 and Black hill GM/SS-167 are planning a meet in the cafe at Craigdon sports just off the bypass at about the same time.

There’s planned to be a couple of operators on each hill, hope to catch you all tomorrow s2s.

Whilst not where the action is in ES, I plan to be out on GW/SW-003 in the morning - so maybe some S2S opportunities.

I think I may go and swap my alert call from GM4LLD to MS0TA in that case Tony

Now I’m definitely incentivised for S2S  I was planning to focus on 2M SSB / CW, with 10W plus roll-up J-Pole (from the 705, not cheap and cheerful Quansheng SSB  ). Feels like that might be a stretch to get to ES. Possible I could muster a 3 element yagi for 2M, but the current set-up I have is a bit clunky for taking to a hill-top. Will take HF too.

There’s a small chance of some tropo.

It looks to be better later on, and on Saturday, for those planning a second summit.

Mount Blair GM/ES-035 The Prequel

As a good way of walking the dogs and stretching the legs I walked up Mount Blair on the way up. I have seen Frasers weather forecast, but it was dry and sunny in the North Pennines early this morning and it appeared to be quite “Scottish” by the time I got to the summit!

When I set off it was dryish… so I left the shelter and when I got to the summit it became wettish so it was a very quick run on 40m which seemed to be very good for inter G contacts. I walked up in shirt sleeves and the temperature was 11C as I left the van. Just over 2 hours later and the temperature had dropped to 3C and coming past the Ski Centre it was sleet….

I did get a bit of a view on the way down!

I’m quite glad the forecast for tomorrow is good as it looks a bit chilly tonight…

However it looks very promising tomorrow.

Tried to get you on 2m from North Edinburgh today but no joy.

Hopefully better luck tomorrow from height with a decent antenna.

Hahahaha! Sleeting hard here, cars are white but roads are wet. Snow gates closed at Spittal of Glenshee and Braemar.

Also sleeting hard in GD land. If the mountain road’s open tomorrow I’ll drag myself up GD-001 for the first time this year, may just be the handheld though if it’s blowing a hoolie.

A bit of overnight snow. More than expected.

Going to be a fab day - if and when we can get to the hills.

And the gates will open, because it will be a geeat skiing day…

In Braemar too. I’m the ‘right” side of the gate. (Dog emptying duties)

Gates opened 0845

This time I was in the sun not mist. Like Gavin, I diverted to avoid snow gates. Views were rather jolly. In the Bothy now.
