SOTAwatch Android spotting app?

Occasionally I bring my Google Nexus 7 tablet on activations. Using its Google Chrome browser to self spot is very cumbersome and slow. Are there any Android apps available or in development that would allow me to pre-configure spotting information for multiple potential spots at home before the activation and then once on the summit, quickly choose/edit the spot info and send it?

Thanks & 73,

Thanks Juerg, I’ll give that app a try although it doesn’t offer the pre-configured spotting info - you still need to manually enter each form field. (correction: it prefills your sota ref automagically)

He Barry,

yeah, right, but the app using GPS to automatically detect which peak you are, and carries the Reference directly themselves.

I find this app great.

So far I have not found anything better.

Wow, I downloaded the app and installed it. It seems to run fine and is VERY cool - I love it already! Thanks very much Juerg.

And by prefilling my ref in the send spot screen, it does help with what I specifically set out to do (make self spotting easier)

There is also ‘DroidSpot NA’ and ‘DroidSpot EU’ in the Google Play Store. These two apps send SMS spots to the SotaWatch site. No GPS or 3G connection required. All it does is formats the SMS message in the correct form so you don’t have to think about it.
If you search for DroidSpot in the Play store the correct version for your area will appear. The only difference between the two is the phone number it sends the SMS.

This doesn’t sound suitable for a Tablet?

Barry,
You are correct, I missed the part about you using a Tablet… Not enough coffee this morning

Hello Andrew, I looked for such an app for a long time.
It works perfect on my old 7 inch P-1000 Tab.
Thank you!

tnx for this to Jörg DL1DLF

I used the app for the first time yesterday from W2/EH-001. It seemed to work well. Evidently for any recently spotted station, it only displays the latest spot for that station and doesn’t display previous spots.

"Own position is based on GPS or the mobile network. In the first line before the locator is accordingly “GPS” or "network.“Â If you want to determine the location via GPS, it should turn on before starting the app. The position is determined by GPS takes a relatively long time but when you start. For a quick start, is therefore prior to loading the mountain waiting list only briefly to a position statement from the mobile network, which only takes a few seconds. If GPS is on, then switches to the app on GPS, which allows a much more accurate positioning. Alternatively, you can just turn the GPS on the Android menu key and then later in the app twice on the compass.”

In reply to DK2RMP:

I think you’re saying to turn on the Android GPS before starting the App? How do you manually turn on the Android GPS?

Barry N1EU

In reply to N1EU:

On a phone it’s on one of the main slider screens…also has WiFi, Bluetooth, etc. Might not be the case for a tablet so check Settings.

Barry,
Yes it’s done through the settings options, however it’s quicker and easier if you use a widget.
if you’re using the Nexus 7 it already comes with a widget to do this.
Select the menu button (circle with 6 squares in it).
Select widgets
Scroll through the pages until you see the Power control widget.
Drag it to the an appropriate place on your “desktop”

That’s it. You can now quickly toggle GPS on and off, along with wifi,Bluetooth, GPS, auto updates, display brightness.
