Actually, it’s not you. I’ve had exactly the same problems in the uk.
I meant to look to see where the shop was hosted but never got round to it.
There are days where I’ve just given up on it because, as you say, it just times out.

You’re not alone…

So it appears we have some access issues but nobody tells us. How do you expect us to fix it then?

Clicking the link brought up the full shop with no obvious delays. I then ran mtr (my traceroute) from here (Livingston), there (Zurich, Switzerland) and elsewhere (La Brea, California)

Here: 11 hops average 20mS latency to the server
There: 13 hops average 24mS latency to the server
Elsewhere: 12 hops 161mS latency to the server

If you want to know if it’s you or everyone then use this website

For the SOTA shop the link is:

The shop is hosted on a commercial server with a mirror server and essentially unlimited bandwidth.

Suggest you get the children (yours or the neighbour’s) to stop playing online games and slowing down your connection when you want to access the shop :)!!

Seriously though, the shop doesn’t have much data to send, it uses Javascript for functionality and places a cookie on your computer to keep track of what you are in the process of ordering. I have not tested it over a dial-up line, no problems with the (very slow) broadband connection here; if you are using dial-up let me know and I will see if I can compress the images any more to try to make it faster at 56k.

Well Andy I think we’re telling you now

The thing with the shop is that I rarely visit it. It’s not like Sotawatch or the database which gets hammered everyday and it will be immediately apparent to 100s of folks if it goes down even for a few seconds.

Anyway I’ve checked again just now and guess what, the site will not load in Firefox, IE, or Chrome.

Pings good and tracert OK

Trace complete.

The raw HTML page loads OK but no Images.
Even trying to download an image on it’s own fails eg
http://www.sota-shop.co.uk/images/menu/homeov.gif fails to load and connection is reset by Peer.

As this had all the hallmarks of a blocked site by my ISP (Virgin), I tried a German proxy, and way hey, Site loads instantly!

I’ve had to use the same proxy for other US Sites eg NaP3
which has exactly the same symptoms.

Bottom line is, it appears that some UK (and VK) ISPs are blocking access to the shop.
I’ve added it to my list of Proxy shortcuts!

Funny, Virgin (cable) is my ISP and it works fine. Report it to them.

Loads fine in Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Firefox

Guess you need to have a word with your ISP.

I had problems with some sites being blocked by BT and it took me to spit out my dummy, throw teddy out of the pram and then throw my pram through their window before BT would do anything about it!

Good luck
