SOTA REPORT FROM THE U.S. & CANADA by Skip K6DGW
As I write this 2013 will officially be history in 4 days. The growth of interest in SOTA activities in Canada and the US is nothing short of phenomenal.
I’ve got quite a bit of news to end 2013, so off we go …

Activity was down a little in just about all categories which isn’t at all surprising given the holiday season and the truly crummy weather in the upper midwest and across the northeast. I prepared the 3-digit Chaser table manually, I really hope I didn’t miss anyone.
AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS:
Elliott, K6EL, became a Super Sloth with 10,000+ chaser points. When he is not on a summit, Elliott must have had his radio surgically attached.
Along with Elliott, Scott, KG3W, also made Super Sloth status this month.
Bob, AJ5C, has achieved Mountain Hunter Platinum with chaser contacts in
20+ associations.
Sequential Slothmates KB1RJC and KB1RJD, Herm and Merle, report from the log cabin in the White Mountains of NH that their chaser points are now both over 4,000.
Dan, NA6MG, has succeeded in activating his 300th summit, and Bob, KI0G, claims to be Dan’s very first SOTA QSO. Dan has also built up a massive lead in the 12m Challenge with 50,000+ points, all as an Activator.
Eric, KU6J, earned a new trophy for 1,000 Summit to Summit points.
Fred, KT5X, made a very rare DX contact: New Mexico summit to Russian ham aboard ship in the middle of the Indian Ocean, five watts QRP on both ends, using twenty meters! Just think, it’s been 101 years since the Radio Act of 1912 banished Amateur operators to 200 meters and down “because they were useless frequencies.” Nice going Fred!
NEWS:
Andrew, KD5ZZK, who lives in Baton Rouge LA, a state with no qualifying SOTA summits [even under a p100 rule], hasn’t let that stop him. He’s undertaken several SOTA Expeditions, this last one is arguably a marathon. Andrew has been known to stop in the middle of a snow storm to tackle an unplanned summit.
With Rooster’s untimely passing, there was sadness in the NA SOTA community, however two new arrivals in the WS0TA barnyard are cause for rejoicing. Barley and Acorn have joined Peanut and are in BSGT [Basic SOTA Goat Training] as I write this. Word from Steve is that Peanut, the Beta goat, was wary at first. Perhaps he can clue B and A in on just who the Alpha goat really is.
CORRECTIONS:
We’ll start an occasional section for when the need arises, and it has arisen twice in December:
If you think you worked Nate, N0PCL, on 26 Dec on W6/SC-314, he actually was on W6/SC-214, the result of an incorrect self-spot.
And also on 26 Dec, Kevin, KJ5FA, incorrectly spotted himself on W5A/OA-001. If you think you worked Kevin on 12 meters, he was really on W5A/OA-003.
CHANGES:
And finally, there will be some changes in the Worldwide SOTA report prepared so well by Roy, G4SSH. Roy has stepped down to better take care of some difficult family medical issues, and temporarily, I will take over the entire report published monthly on the SOTA Reflector.
Consequently, to put the report together, I will need news just as everyone has been supplying Roy so far. Emails to k6dgw@foothill.net will do the trick. If you will put “SOTA” somewhere in the subject, my automatic SOTA filter will dump it into the correct folder. The NA SOTA report will continue to be a part of the WW report. I usually have prepared it on the 28th when possible to get it to Roy in time and initially, we’ll keep a deadline of noon [2000Z] on the 28th until I get this organized. We are on Pacific Standard Time [UTC-8.0].
And, we will miss Roy’s report a lot, however I will really miss working with him. It has been a pleasure, and Andrea and I wish the best for Roy and his family in this difficult time.

VK REPORT by Allen VK3HRA
Hi all,
With the end of 2013 we will look back at a big year for SOTA in Australia. There have been many activities worthy of attention this year and not all have been in the field. The effort required to bring an association on line is measured in many weeks of pouring over maps and computers to ensure the correct data and should not be understated. Well done to those who contributed to bringing VK2 and VK4 online.
The patience demonstrated by Chasers is evident by the 30 plus Shack Sloths we now have. Whilst the activators sitting on top of the hill may gain the glory, they require skilled chasers to qualify the summits.
Given the low power activations and degrading HF conditions the skill and patience required to claw out a remote signal from the noise is admirable.
Andrew VK1NAM and Allen VK3HRA both achieved 1000 points Summit to Summit, which was only introduced in 2013. They are 13 and 15 respectively for the entire SOTA program. This represents consistent activations incorporating chasing and activation skills. Andrew VK1NAM has walked approximately 456 km to activate VK SOTA qualifying summits, between 1 Feb 13 to 31 Dec 13. In addition, Andrew’s efforts in promoting DX S2S contacts has been achieving results with a trend for more activations occurring later in the day and having EU activators setting up early operations to specifically chase VK activations.
The take up of SOTA activations combined with F call licenses is developing a pool of keen low power operators. Ben VK3FTRV’s multi-summit multi-day walk/activation in November is a great example of embracing spirit of SOTA. 9 summits over two days starting from Gippsland on VK3/VT-034, then Mt Useful, Mt Selma, Connor’s Plain, Mt Shillinglaw, VK3/ VE-091, Mt Skene (where he spent the night), Bald Hill and Mt Terrible Spur. 171 contacts made were made with 3 new summits activated. This also included making a CW contact from the summit of Mt Skene.
CW activations are gaining interest with VK3BYD Warren’s activations gaining a loyal following. Its has been a long year for Warren with CW only activations but with Wayne VK3WAM also picked up on CW only multi-summit activations in December. The desire by several activators of going deeper into the bush whilst reducing weight will see more CW only activations in the coming year as well a many dusting off their CW skills and others picking up the skill for the first time.
What does 2014 hold for SOTA in VK ?
- Expect more goats.
- Increase in CW activations.
- DX SOTA from activators and chasers alike.
Thank you to those of you who have given up so much of your time to help put SOTA in VK together - not just the activators and chasers but also the XYL’s who tolerate our behaviour and makes SOTA the dynamic activity it is today.
Once again, congratulations to Wayne VK3WAM for achieving Mountain Goat status.

SOTA ON TOP BAND - Mark G0VOF
Hello everyone & welcome to this month’s edition of SOTA on Top Band.
Better low band conditions brought more activators to Top Band this month with six activators enjoying success from five separate summits.
First during December was Dave G7CNM/P who activated G/TW-005 Normanby Top during the early evening of Sunday 8th December. Dave used 80 Watts of SSB & had much success making 7 QSO’s including one contact with OH9XX in Finland. Dave has posted an activation report here:
http://secure-web.cisco.com/auth=11-NqP8zJ30JJ7eri-IVWLGi0o9ef0&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sotawatch.org%2Freflector.php%3Ftopic%3D8825
Next up on Wednesday 11th December was John G4YSS operating as GX0OOO/P from G/NP-023 Aye Gill Pike. John had 8 QSO’s, 4 each on SSB & CW again taking advantage of good early evening conditions on the band. John has posted an activation report here:
http://secure-web.cisco.com/auth=11K2_eyIUzpxG3841ny2ZO0nvhI3Cn&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sotawatch.org%2Freflector.php%3Ftopic%3D8841
Also active on the band at the same time was Klaus DF2GN/P who was activating DM/BW-228 Hummelsberg. Klaus made 3 QSO’s using CW but unfortunately there was no summit-to-summit contact between Klaus & John on Top Band.
Klaus posts his activation reports on the thread below:
http://secure-web.cisco.com/auth=11VMZYs_AbabTZfFbktSFMeFEXnwPM&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sotawatch.org%2Freflector.php%3Ftopic%3D8044
Detail of his 160m activation on 11th December can be found here:
http://secure-web.cisco.com/auth=11Mc-Cu58lvq-NBCmBhqsU6YID6PLD&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sotawatch.org%2Freflector.php%3Ftopic%3D8832
Next, on the evening of Monday 16th December, Stephan DM1LE/P activated DL/BE-093 Buchberg. Stephan posted a self-spot announcing, “expect no big signal hi hi†but with a fine total of 14 CW QSO’s it seems that is exactly what we got! I was in the shack & listening for Stephan but due to the weather I was unable to put up my 15m vertical, instead listening on my 80m loop. Top Band is very noisy on this antenna & I only heard brief bursts of Stephan’s signal appear out of the noise. I did however listen using one of the numerous WebSDR’s & on that Stephan was easy copy. It was very nice to hear him make so many contacts.
In the evening of Friday 20th December, Peter OE5RTP/P & Inga OE5IRO/P carried out a joint activation of OE/OO-118 Damberg. Conditions were good & despite some QSB they each made 6 QSO’s using SSB.
The final activation this month (at the time of writing) took place during the late evening of Sunday 22nd December when Klaus DF2GN/P returned to DM/BW-228 Hummelsberg. This time Klaus had more success with a stunning total of 18 QSO’s including 2 using SSB. Klaus had a good spread on contacts from around EU but sadly did not make it across the pond to the US.
Klaus’s activation reports can be found here:
http://secure-web.cisco.com/auth=11VMZYs_AbabTZfFbktSFMeFEXnwPM&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sotawatch.org%2Freflector.php%3Ftopic%3D8044
Thanks & very well done to Dave, John, Klaus, Stephan, Peter & Inga.
At the time of writing, those were the only Top band activations during December that I am aware of, if I have missed any others please let me know.
On 8th December, Dave G7CNM/P activated G/TW-005 Normanby Top & made 7 QSO’s using SSB.
On 11th December, John G4YSS operating as GX0OOO/P activated G/NP-028 Aye Gill Pike & made 8 QSO’s (4 CW / 4 SSB).
On 11th December, Klaus DF2GN/P activated DM/BW-228 Hummelsberg & made 3 QSO’s using CW.
On 16th December, Stephan DM1LE/P activated DL/BE-093 Buchberg & made 14 QSO’s using CW.
On 20th December, Peter OE5RTP/P activated OE/OO-118 Damberg & made 6 QSO’s using SSB.
On 20th December, Inga OE5IRO/P activated OE/OO-118 Damberg & made 6 QSO’s using SSB.
On 22nd December, Klaus DF2GN/P activated DM/BW-228 Hummelsberg & made 18 QSO’s (16 CW / 2 SSB).
As always, If you do have any suggestions on things that you think should be included, or if you wish to contribute tips, ideas or anything else that you think may help others on the band please email them to me at mark@brownhill.demon.co.uk
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
Until next month,
Best 73,
Mark G0VOF

CW and SSB chaser scores continue to increase but FM shows a slight fall.
On behalf of the 3450+ chasers listed in the SOTA data base (2000 last year) I would like to thank all activators for their contribution to the programme. The foremost aim of these tables is to recognise the effort and dedication that all activators have put into the SOTA programme. The abandonment of many attempted activations in blizzard and snowdrift conditions during December served to highlight the difficulties that can be encountered by activators. (Ed - G4SSH)
CW REPORT FOR DECEMBER 2013 - by Roy G4SSH
The 1st December 2013 saw a flurry of activity with the start of winter bonus. The low SOTA activity rate during the month of November was banished with a spot count exceeding 200. Leading the start of the Winter Bonus collection was Etienne K7ATN on CW at 0003 utc and Andrew VK1NAM/2 on SSB at 0023.
Chris ON6ZQ activated EA8/GC-001 in the Canary Islands on the 1st December.
Martin DF3MC activated EA8/TF-002 in the Canary Islands on the 4th December.
Hans PB2T activated Z3/WM-046 from Macedonia on the 17th December, a summit previously almost exclusive to Vlado Z35M.
The wide band multi-tone that caused QRM on 7.032 KHz returned on the morning of the 8th December and lasted for 2 weeks, which was much longer than the usual four days.
Sake PA0SKP reported that he made a SOTA trip to 4 summits in Germany. The trip was mainly to “unstress” himself from his work. Unfortunately, conditions were not good for VK contacts but he did manage the following
12m UU, N7,DL
20m K, G, GM, DL, OK, EA, LZ, HA, LA …etc
30m EU…
40m EU…
for a grand total of 140 QSO’s.
EU activations decreased towards the end of the month as severe winter weather swept across the continent, but Klaus DF2GN continued with his antenna experiments often in deep snow and darkness, giving maximum points to many chasers on many bands.
There was a rare but welcome return of Norby activating OE/VB-426 as OE/LX1NO on the 30th December. This was followed by the return of Jaakko OH7BF activating OH/KU-007 on the 31st.
Sake PA0SKP, and Hans, PA3FYG will activate from Germany on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of January, in the DM/NW and DM/HE regions.
As we go to press on the 31st there are numerous alerts for stations in the USA and Australia intending to activate before and after the stroke of midnight UTC and so gain (and give) double points for the old and new year.

SOTA News is normally published around noon UTC on the last day of each month but there will be occasions when the Editor is not available at this time, in which case it will be published as soon as possible afterwards. It can only be as interesting as the items submitted, so if you think your particular field of interest is not being covered then please submit an article by the 25th of the month. Have you a favourite SOTA? favourite mode? favourite rig, antenna, or favourite band? How did you find your first day / month / year as an activator or chaser? Your comments and experiences will be read by SOTA enthusiasts all across Europe, the USA, Australia and beyond, in a total of 24 different countries. Your input will be most welcome.
I receive many e-mails during the month containing details of activations, milestones reached and general SOTA news. Unless advised otherwise I will use this information in the next edition of SOTA News. It is important therefore that you advise me if any information is not intended for publication.
The SOTA News team wish all activators, chasers, SWL’s and their families a very Happy New Year and trust that you will continue to gain much satisfaction from SOTA in 2014.
