SOTA NEWS APRIL 2017 - Part 2
=========================================================
SOTA at Ham Radio Friedrichshafen 2017
For the third year in a row, for 2017 at Ham Radio Friedrichshafen there will be an information session devoted to SOTA, again organized by Dr. Juerg Regli HB9BIN. The SOTA mini-presentations will be held on Saturday July 15, 2017, in the “Österreich” meeting room from 2 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. This year Andy Sinclair MM0FMF will be unable to attend, so there will be no Q&A session with the SOTA Management Team at the session. The program is expected to consist of the following five mini-presentations of 15 minutes each, all in English, followed by time for questions.
· Using the RBN for SOTA by Hans-Peter HB9BXE
· From paper logging to tablet logging – the VK3ZPF “VK port-a-log” Android app by Manuel HB9DQM
· Log4OM: Free logging software with full SOTA support by Daniele IW3HMH
· SOTA Cycling Tour DL–OE–I by Jakob DK3CW
· “Extreme SOTA” by Emil DL8JJ
VK port-a-log is a logging app for SOTA/WWFF activators. It runs on Android tablets and phones and makes it possible to efficiently log QSOs made during an activation. The log can be exported directly in SOTA or ADIF format, and spotting is possible from within the app. In this presentation, the features and use of VK port-a-log will be explained.
The Reverse Beacon Network (RBN) is a revolutionary new idea. Instead of beacons actively transmitting signals, the RBN is a network of stations listening to the bands and reporting what stations they hear, when they hear them and how well in dB. In this presentation we explain to SOTA enthusiasts the spotting scheme in general, automatic spotting via RBNHole, and the purpose of the RBN system. You will learn how to compare your signal with different antennas, what the SNR numbers mean and how to set up your own RBN.
Log4OM is free software developed by Daniel Pistollato IW3HMH for the complete management of the station log. The application is developed in C# and is compiled to run on any Windows operating system from XP and above (Vista, Windows 7, 8, 10). Log4OM is designed to be easy to understand as well as easy to adapt to the requirements of the individual. With Log4OM you have full SOTA support.
Inspired by winning the SOTA Cycling Week competition in 2016, I set off with my ham-bicycle from Frankfurt, Germany, heading for the Alps to accomplish an almost human-powered approach and activation of distant SOTA summits. My first stop was East Tyrol, where I managed to activate four summits, two of them first activations. Climbing, hiking and cycling were shaped by challenging, unsettled wx condx from 35 °C in the shade to −4 °C and 15 cm of snow – but excellent propagation condx. I did another another first activation in the Dolomites on the Italian-Austrian border before I returned to Munich via Bruneck, the Brenner Pass and Innsbruck.
I look forward to seeing you once again at the third SOTA information session at Ham Radio.
Juerg Regli, HB9BIN

SOTA ON TOP BAND - Mark G0VOF
Hello everyone & welcome to this month’s edition of SOTA on Top Band.
One activator took to the band this month, in the last few days on the UK winter bonus period.
On the Monday 13th March John G4YSS (GX0OOO/P embarked on another 3 summit tour of the Northern Pennines with Top Ban planned fropm the first & last summits. His first summiot that day was G/NP-016 Dodd Fell Hill & with longer daylight hours John planned an early start. He was significantly earlier than his alerted time when I heard him calling at around 0720z on 1832KHz CW. Conditions were reasonable & we worked with ease but John could only raise one other station on CW, Roy G4SSH before a change of mode to SSB. This was a little more successful & after working Nick G8VNW I worked John a second time, before finally Dave G4IAR gave John his fourth separate contact.
The second summit of the three was G/NP-031 Birks Fell, which was a VHF only activation.
John’s third summit was G/NP-017 Fountains Fell & as he was now running ahead of schedule he included a session on 14MHz CW before a long session on 80m CW & SSB which included a spell on the usual WAB frequency of 3760KHz, which produced something of a pileup. After a short break John was soon calling on 1832KHz CW & again we worked with ease at 589 both ways before Rob G4RQJ & Roy G4SSH made it into John’s log. The next caller was Phil G4OBK from his new QTH, where he no longer has a good Top Band antenna. Combined with the common problem of high noise from neighbouring properties & Phil struggled to hear John, but with considerable perseverance a valid exchange was finally achieved.
Following Phil was Mike G0BPU before a change of mode to SSB brought another QSO with me followed by Nick G8VNW, Dave G4IAR & Terry G0VWP.
Superbly detailed reports for these activations can be found here:
G4YSS: G/NP-016, G/NP-031, G/NP-017 on 13-03-17
Thanks & well done John.
At the time of writing, those were the only Top band activation during March that I am aware of, if I have missed any others please let me know.
On 13 March, John GX0OOO/P (G4YSS) Activated G/NP-016 Dodd Fell Hill & made 5 QSO’s (2 CW / 3 SSB)
On 13 March, John GX0OOO/P (G4YSS) Activated G/NP-017 Fountains Fell & made 9 QSO’s (5 CW / 4 SSB)
As always, If you do have any suggestions on things that you think should be included, or if you wish to contribute tips, ideas or anything else that you think may help others on the band please email them to me at mark@brownhill.demon.co.uk
Until next month,
Best 73,
Mark G0VOF

CW REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 2017 - Roy G4SSH
The month got off to a flying start with numerous SOTA activators visiting the Canary Islands.
Geert EA8/PA7ZEE/p
Victor EA8/GI4ONL/p
Christoph EA8/DK9TN/p
followed on the 4th by Tom M1EYP/p
followed on the 6th by Thomas EA8/DL1DVE/p, with Mario EA8/DL4MFM/p.
SOTA activity was initially light at the beginning of the month, but this increased towards the middle of the month, with stations eager to qualify for the extra points during the last few days of winter bonus. Activity peaked over the last weekend of WB (11th-12th) with just over “500 spots listed in the past 12 hours” at 1700 UTC on the Saturday. CW Activity then remained at a lower level for the remainder of the month, with “265 spots in last 12 hours” on the following Saturday at the same time.
The low level of activity also affected chasers, with activators heard calling continuously for long periods on spot frequencies, with no chasers replying, even with desperate self- spotting by the activator.
Many activators and chasers struggled in the poor propagation conditions. Some activators were heard using 80m as we headed towards the sunspot minimum.
There were many cross-border expeditions.
Heard during the first half of the month were the following highlights:-

SOTA News is normally published on the last day of each month, but there will be occasions when the Editor is not available at this time, in which case it will be published as soon as possible afterwards. It can only be as interesting as the items submitted, so if you think your particular field of interest is not being covered then please submit an article by the 25th of the month.
Have you a favourite SOTA? favourite mode? favourite rig, antenna, or favourite band? How did you find your first day / month / year as an activator or chaser? Your comments and experiences will be read by enthusiasts all across Europe, the USA, Australia and beyond, in a total of 114 different SOTA associations worldwide. Your input will be most welcome.
We receive many e-mails during the month containing details of activations, milestones reached and general SOTA news. Unless advised otherwise we will use this information in the next edition of SOTA News. It is important therefore that you advise us if any information is not intended for publication.
For ease of processing, please submit your input by e-mail direct to the addresses below and not via the Reflector.
