SOTA hopping – Definition?

Reading the well written SOTA documentation (even the Environmental Statement) I wonder if I may have missed the definiton for SOTA hopping.

Is this to collect as much activator points as possible per day?
If yes, are there sub-modes for SOTA hopping considering the environmental compatibility, e.g. Walking, Public Transport, Private Transport?

Any helpful hints?
