SOTA activation of Triglav S5/JA-001, the highest mountain in Slovenia

Hello everyone,

I was on the long distance hiking trail across the Alps from Salzburg to Trieste and had the opportunity to SOTA acivate the highest mountain in Slovenia (Triglav, 2864m) in the Triglav National Park.

The climb and the activation were a little adventure and the highlight of my hiking tour. I had a QRP handheld radio with me for space and weight reasons and worked exclusively on 2m FM.

I wrote a detailed report abot the activation in my weblog. Have fun reading!

There is a german version of the report as well.

Thank you for your account of activating Triglav. One of my cave-exploring friends made an expedition to explore a cave under Triglav back in the 1960s, and for the first time I saw pictures of the amazing limestone mountains where he had been. My friend has since died, but your story reminded me of him. Thank you.

Hi Marc,
Thank you for very interesting activation report and nice pictures. Congratulation on your Alpe-Adria long distance hiking trail achievement.I am glad to be the first in your log, your signal was real 59 on my FT5DE handheld with rubber duck antenna here in Ljubljana. Reagarding the views from Triglav, no wonder with it’s 2864 m height and 2052 m prominence.

Hello Mirko,
it was great talking with you! And I am impressed that you used a FT5DE handheld as well with the little rubber antenna. I thought you were sitting on a big station with some sort of Yagi antenna
QSL card will be sent in the next days! 73 Marc DO1MJ

Hello Marc,
I enjoyed a lot reading your report, beautiful description of the route and nice pictures, well done on your activation.
The narrow path was frightening and I felt your excitement in the summit.

Thanks for sharing and good luck in your next adventure.

Hello Marc,
Thank you for your interesting report on the Alpe-Adria Trail and especially the activation of the Triglav, which I was also able to climb in 2004. At that time, however, without the knowledge that there was such a thing as Sota.
I also ran a few stages of the trail, namely from the Großglockner to Spittal/Drau.
Thank you and best 73 es awdh
