This morning we scrambled to vacate our apartment rental, grab a cab, get onto the high speed train to Barcelona and sit back to enjoy the ride. 300 kph is thrilling, especially when another train passes on adjacent tracks. 500+ kph closing speed!
Our rental was ready as soon as we arrived so I had a chance to escape and make the hike up to Montjuic Castle. I found a spot along a wall with a good northwest facing drop-off. Up went the 44’ doublet on a 12’ mast, the ends drooping horizontal. With everything plugged in I fired up the KX3. The bands sounded good! It was hard to decide where to be. I started on 15 and had the best luck there. K6ARK wins most distant QSO, with WA7JTM and NJ7V tied for 2nd. WB2FUV, VE2JCW and AC1Z heard me for three S2S. WC1N and KK1X couldn’t pull me through on 20. LZ1GJ/P, M1BUU/P, EC7ZT/P, GM4OIG/P rounded out the S2S tally, 10 in all. My 32 QSOs included several US chasers. N1AIA had more info beyond the RST, but I could not copy it. Sorry about that. My operating site turned out to be busier than expected so I was frequently pointing out the CAT5 twisted pair feedline lying on the dirt. There wasn’t a way to suspend it above head height.
The views from the castle grounds are stunning. I will be back as a tourist!
Thanks to the chasers who rounded out the QSO total. JP, AA4BP, was the first QSO.

Thanks for the QSO, David! That was awesome. Heck of a day.

K6ARK
I’m so glad you could pull me through, Adam. It was my second try after 20 or 30 minutes.
The pole I got from you was holding up the doublet!

Great to work you David! One of my two Europe s2s QSO’s today.
thanks

WA7JTM
Thank you for calling me, Pete. I didn’t realize till later that you were on a summit. Sweet!

Great to work you David. Many thanks for the call. Apologies for not getting your call until you repeated it. It certainly looks like you had much better propagation than I did further north… no Arizona contacts for me ths time around.

Yes, Gerald, great to make an S2S with you. EA3/N6AN/P is a lot to digest. I was XE1/AA6RX, a mouthful, for eleven years until I picked up N6AN in 2001.
WA7JTM called in slowly and, though not very strong, Q5 on 15.
Like the QSO with N1AIA I didn’t realize it was an S2S until after the event. Bonus!!
NJ7V was a solid S5 on 10.
The photo is of my 12’ mast and one half of the 44’ doublet. The blue and white CAT5 cable can be seen next to the nearly invisible mast. In the lower left one can just see the Olympic torch structure. My equipment fit nicely on the rock lip. A small clipboard with paddle attached is out of view in my hands.

Looks good to me David and that photo showing your antenna is very atmospheric.
Even through I do have the Elecraft paddle that plugs into the KX3, like you I use a separate key with mine as it is cased and I also prefer to use a straight key as I make fewer gaffs.
Hopefully I will recognise your call first time the next time you call. Enjoy your time in EA3.
