Rucksack radio tool using android 4.3

I have downloaded rucksack radio tool onto my phone that has android 4.3 os on it. I seem to be sending spots successfully by sms and wifi but none of them are getting through. I see on Joerg’s notes that he says to uninstall 4.3 and load 2.3. This seems a bit drastic and I was wondering if there was another way or if anyone else has successfully used this app with android 4.3?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Nick

i used RRT with android 4.2.2 and it worked fine for me … until two or three weeks ago the selfspotting did not work anymore. there was a server-update on SOTAwatch at that time, so that may be the problem.

i hope that the nice app will start working soon again!

I recently also started with RRT on Android 4.2.2. I do not think DL1DLF asks you to downgrade to Android 2.3. The only point is how to allow an app of unknown origin to be installed. But apparently you already managed this step.

To my mind the problem is SOTAWatch moved to a new server recently. DJ9MH told me his RRT was working fine and stopped sending spots recently.

I’ll try to get into touch with DL1DLF and ask him.

Hi Martin

Thanks. I think that others are using the tool successfully though.

Looking at all RRT selfspots in the last 72h I see, they are all using the SMS Spot option but none is using the Webinterface. So a work around would be to use SMS Spots meanwhile.
I have dropped Joerg an email regarding the selfspots.

Hi Nick - Michael

Can confirm that RRT spotting via a Mobile network has stopped working now. Couldn’t self spot today (Thanks G4SSH for DAS instead).Hope DL1DLF can work with SOTA MT to fix it, as the app is invaluable.

The underlying problem is most likely RRT was using the wrong address that just happened to work. When the DNS changes happened RRT was left trying to use something that doesn’t exist anymore.

Spotlite server lives here: Summits on the Air but for a long, long time sota.plato.cybus.co.uk/Spotlite resolved to the same thing.

When the DNS changed, spots sent to sota.plato… would languish in a never, never land and didn’t get sent to SOTAwatch whereas spots to www.sota… did. You could see all the RRT spots sat on sota.plato… with nowhere to go.

Moral of the story, always used the published API.

Hi Andy
Thanks. I am not sure how I will change the API but hopefully someone will help!

In reply to G4OOE:
Hi Nick, you can’t change the API/URL reference. Joerg DL1DLF has to change the code in RRT I believe. Someone has already informed Joerg but he is very busy at the moment. As this is free app, (and a very good one at that) we can only wait until Joerg has time to look at this.
The fact that Joerg also supports SMS spotting in the application gives us an alternative in the interim. The other option is to go to the spotlite site or indeed the sotawatch webpage using a browser on Android to add a web based spot. My experience on Android 4.0.3 is that the spotlite site does not work with the native Android 4.0.3 browser but is fine with Firefox or Chrome for Android.
At the moment I am spotting with SMS from RRT.

It works on my standard Android browser on Android 4.0.3

RRT is repaired. For sending spots via the app with 3G, it is necessary to install the version 0.6.2b from today.

Hi Joerg

Thank you very much for updating the interface to RRT. I am sure that I speak on behalf of many SOTA activators in saying that your app is very much appreciated. I have just tested it out and it works fine on my new phone and I am very much looking forward to using it very soon on the hills.

Also thanks Andy, Ed and everyone else for your help.

Many thanks for the updated version Joerg which is very much appreciated. I too have been using the software since you released it. The latest version tested out just fine. It is the first time that I have used a QR code direct from the computer screen to download an app to the phone. QR Droid managed the complete process.

Thanks for fixing RRT. Just a minor bug, the voice alert announces the band but not the mode, eg “There is an activation of abc on 40” but no cw, ssb etc.

Still, good to be able to spot again!

In reply to VK1DI:

Interestingly, the mode missing from voice announcement goes away if I use mode filtering. Probably just a strange spot causing the error.

Note: If you have installed the version 0.6.2b from 18/07/2014 over an older version, you will found two RRT apps on the phone. Please delete the app called Rucksack_Radio_Tool_V0062 and make the update again.

In the app list there should be only one RRT called Rucksack_Radio_Tool.

I’ll have a look at the speech problem on Monday.
