Anyone contemplating Lake District activities this weekend Jan 16th 17th 18th or next weekend 23rd 24th 25th should be aware that roadworks will totally close the A590 east of Greenodd for about one mile. This will be from from 8pm to 6am on each of the days quoted. The signed diversion is via Windermere, Ambleside Coniston and Torver, about 35 extra miles! The roads of the diversion are not good and heavy vehicles are going to have fun particularly if they meet. There are the odd minor roads that are car suitable but excellent planning by separate agencies has a couple of them closed as well. The Furness Peninsula will be pretty well isolated so just hope we don;t need any extra fire service etc, Have fun

Thanks for that, Rob, I have posted this information on the MMC Forum, they have a meet in Llanberis this week but any heading for the Lakes next weekend will know to go via Penrith to avoid traffic.
Latest news is that because of the fear of ice on the alternative route this weekends efforts were postponed, literally at the last minute. It now seems that they will attempt next weekend and the weekend after but maybe the weekend after that! The works were originally posted for the two weekends before the holidays but were moved following complaints from the tourist industry about the effects on trade.
Hope no one has been inconvenienced by all this and we will try and put a new warning here if and when the closure is to happen
