You could try a seperate receive antenna. A small tuned loop at the end of the garden as far away from local noise and orientated to null noise will probably improve your receive capability.

This is a very good idea. I am a fan of tuned loops, I use them for MF utility monitoring. I’d need to figure out some form of T/R switching as I’m using an FT901DM which only has one SO239 by way of antenna connectors. It would be an interesting and straightforward exercise to lash together a quick RX loop (cardboard boxes make cheap quick and dirty formers) and do a side by side comparison.
