I’ve set this thread up for the reports for tomorrow’s event. I wish everyone participating all the very best, hoping that a good number of contacts are made across the pond. Many thanks to you all for supporting this event.
73, Gerald G4OIG (note: I will be operating as G8CXK/P from Long Crag G/SB-008).
I’ve made a few Transatlantic QSO’s with an FT818 running 5w on ssb via a link dipole. Mostly on 15m, but also on 20m, 17m, 12m and 10m so it is possible. It mainly seems to depend on the space weather from my experience.
I’ve worked Transatlantic many times with QRP and even QRPp.
Barry N1EU once sent me a recording of my QRPp CW signal recieved in New York State. I’d actually built the RockMite QRPp transceiver on the summit with a portable soldering during my activation.
You can hear the recording in my YouTube video -
Of course CW has advantage over SSB, but I have worked transatlantic with QRP SSB also.
Well….i was on GM/SS-256 with 15W from my KX3 and an EFHW. I made one QSO on 40m and six on 20m. Five were S2S but none transatlantic.
Frankly, band conditions were awful for me and, at one point, I wasn’t convinced I would get four in the log, let alone work the other side of the Atlantic
Well, it was a good afternoon out but really not a good day for radio. First I thought I had a problem with the radio, checking all my settings, cables … Also the weather was threatening so I didn’t even bother to put up my shiny moxon.
I didn’t hear anything from NA. A few s2s in eu, then I was fed up and folded everything quickly.
After a delayed start due to some heavy showers, and exploring a different route to the AZ I managed 6 QSOs on 17m (3 in the UK) and 1 each on 15m, 6m and 2m.
Conditions on HF were poor, no NA heard and no EU summits.
I could barely hear a few ops in GB, Spain, and Switzerland. I kept tuning around SOTAwatch spots. By the time I decided to try some US parks, an hour and a half had gone by and my fingers were numb.
Zero for the day.
The day started at 00:30 (local), picking a tick off my back. I was not relaxed after that and it was less than 2 hours until the alarm. Coffee time. Started up the trail in the 5am (local) dark. Plenty peaceful at that time.
This was the first time taking a fiberglass pole to a summit. The new end-fed that got some 57 reports yesterday in my yard wasn’t enough today.
I picked this hill as a short walk in with a big lead acid battery to power the FT857, alas to no avail. I couldn’t hear any T/A stations from their spots and only one EU station responded to mine, thank you @F5PYI .
Oddly, I could hear an HZ1 and a BG0 station on15m but they couldn’t hear me, even turning the power up.
The day ended up being some good local chats on 2m at the end of 145 alive so it turned out fine.
It was a lot colder in the strong wind today and I’d forgotten to pack my flask, schoolboy error. When the squalls cleared the views out over the Forth and Tay were good today.
I love these events and by now I think I’ve done half a dozen at least. These were the worst band conditions I’ve seen for one of these.
I often bring an amp or QRO radio for the Trans-Atlantic festivities, but this time I used the barefoot KX2 and a homebuilt EFHW based on HB9EAJ’s work, with the Fair-Rite 2643625002 toroid. I’d already activated W4V/SH-024 (Kennedy Peak) this year but I have a place to stay nearby and it’s a pleasant hour hike up to a spot with very low background RF noise.
I’d been operating for almost an hour an unable to hear any of the spots from across the pond, and also had no replies at all on 15m after several stretches of CQing, and was starting to think I’d be limited to S2S in North America. Then I heard Gerald as G8CXK on 17m! The S-meter flickered between 0 and 1 but I could hear him reasonably well with the APF switched in. I’d never used that antenna on 17m but the KX2 tuned it up so I gave it a go. He could hear me! Tough copy both ways as I think we both faded out at times, but we got the QSO made. Whew!
I tried 17m some myself, and made more attempts on 20 and 15, but no more overseas contacts could be made, nor could I hear any spots from outside North America. The bad days make the good ones seem better, right?
I packed it in after 2.5 hours, with 21 QSOs and nine total S2S (including the one Trans-Atlantic). I hope others had better luck!
I didn’t hear anyone from EU and the early morning hours were awful within NA. Weather was very poor in W5 area with storms and high winds. Good efforts though. The second peak I had quite a few S2S with improved but still poor conditions.
The local weather was sunny and mild but the solar gods certainly put a damper on our trans-Atlantic s2s Saturday event.
I followed every spot with a careful listen but can only report that I HEARD G8CXK/p on 17 and 20M, also HEARD EA2WX/p on 15M and 20M. Unfortunately, neither of them could hear me calling “s2s s2s”. I knew many EU stations were active today because in addition to SOTAwatch spots, I could hear EC8ADS chasing them on various bands. Hihi. How frustrating !!???
Conditions were likewise poor trying to reach SOTA activators in the Western USA. After 4 hours I had 17 CW contacts 60/40/30/20/17 M including 10 stateside s2s contacts, mostly Eastern USA.
Rig today was KX-2 at 8 watts to a 40M EFHW hung as Inverted-7 up 8 meters on a pole with the tail aligned for EU. Always a fun event.
I was delighted to hear you Mike on my first peak and uncertain we would have success. Glad we got it done. I was running 100 watts to a simple linked vertical antenna I made. The second summit was much easier.
I operated at two POTA parks yesterday (please don’t get me in a headlock and escort me off the premises!) and had a blast on 20m.
I operated park 1 on 10w CW and bagged a QSO with my CW regular K2UPD in New York. Also nabbed a few in Spain, Germany, Finland, Slovenia, Ukraine etc. Took about 35 mins.
Oh, the Swiss was because I needed to open a packet i had taped up. Handy! The TASCAM was to record ambient noise. I wanted to play it back when I got home to run through Merlin and learn some bird calls and song to ID them.
Then done another park on about 3w with this set up and bagged Ukraine, Czechia, Hungary, Finland and more. Plus had a catch up with Alex @EI4JY on a repeater. 39 mins, tops and done.
I could just about hear @WN3F calling CQ on 17m but not well enough to make out the callsign. And then he disappeared. There had been some deep QSB on my earlier EU QSOs but Roy didn’t reappear. I did get 5 EU S2S in the log on HF CW but in general conditions were poor. 2m FM and SSB were good though thanks to the 145 Alive event.
I got wind of 145 Alive yesterday when making a 2m POTA contact. I forgot it was on. I had the linear out as well. 40w spewing out but nothing across the Irish Sea. Didn’t hear much activity either.
I tried 15 and 17 yesterday as well. Both sounded like a morgue. Like most of HF to be honest. There was a CW contest on 20 as well but even CW sounded fairly quiet too.
Hope to get across the Irish Sea and up to NI as well later today from Two Rock summit. Hopefully less busy today. Stopping off on the way home for some 10w QRP CW on 20 and 40 later too if anyone fancies it this arvo.
