Yes, Andy’s post can’t be bumped up the list, so it has dropped off the front page - he’s obviously still in front of his keyboard sorting things out. Hope he’s got a wee dram beside him to see him through the night!

We’re waiting for someone at the host to update the DNS so sotadata.org.uk points to the new server. Everything is (crosses fingers) ready on the new server, it’s sat waiting patiently.

I’ve been selecting some pictures and uploading them to Flickr whilst waiting.

The assembled DNS expertise round the breakfast table at the M1MAJ/M3ZCB household has concluded that the hosting company has done something very strange indeed.

Specifically, sotadata.org.uk now has a lame delegation. It will take more than the mere passage of time to fix this, I believe.

In reply to M1MAJ:

Indeed!

Down For Everyone Or Just Me says that http://www.sotadata.org.uk is up, but I cannot connect to it.

Oh well, patience is a virtue.

If the hosting company think they’ve done the right thing, and that we are merely waiting for the change to propagate, then we’re in for a long wait. I assumed from Andy’s post that this was going to be a simple change of IP address for www.sotadata.org.uk but that is not what has happened at all. The current state (if you interrogate the actual nameservers involved rather than your ISP’s resolvers) is just plain broke.

In reply to M1MAJ:

It should be simple. I think a step has been missed somewhere. But it will have to wait, we’ve got dudes in the office from foreign parts and I am expected to do some work with them :frowning: I should be able to prod the hosts around luchtime.

A whois on sotadata.org.uk responds with the correct nameservers, so it’s part there.

My DNS cannot find it at all. It thinks the address does not exist.

Of course. But I thought it was worth pointing out that we had a situation that was fundamentally broken, rather the expected one in which we were simply waiting for the normal DNS cache expiry mechanisms to do things in their own good time. The difference between the two cases is not always obvious when observing from a distance, so there was the potential for wasting a lot of time waiting for something that would never happen. Just trying to be helpful, not to nag.

In reply to M1MAJ:

Sure, Martyn, I understand that, and there was useful information there for those of us away from the coal face - for instance, as a non-computer guy I had to Google “lame delegation”, another learning opportunity!

Yup, all looks good now. Of course there may still be servers with the old data cached, but at least the new setup is right now. Thanks.

It seems to have been done in a way that seems a trifle odd to me, but I’m sure there’s a good reason for it!

In reply to M1MAJ:

It wasn’t working for me five minutes ago but I just checked and it is back. Thanks, Andy, now I’ve got to get up to date!

In reply to M1MAJ:

It does seem a little strange how it is setup, probably to do with virtual hosting and shared stuff. It’s outside my experience TBH. I know the principles behind DNS which is enough for 99% of the problems you meet. More than that and I pass it over to experts in this field.

Anyway, the DNS was correct to the external nameserver. The issue was the internal virtual host wasn’t properly “DNS” enabled and the old server still was enabled. A quick click on the control panel buttons and it started working for some of my access points.

In reply to MM0FMF:

A quick click on the control panel buttons

… an IT euphemism for switching it off and on again I assume.

At one of the places that I work the internet feed regularly fails and the IT people always say that it is the result of a DoS attack from xxxx (replace xxxx with the most evil country in the news at the time).

In reply to G3CWI:

It was an on and off issue. The right one was off and the wrong one was on. Now the right one is on and the wrong one is off.

Andy. When I went to database, the next screen says Welcome to iis7 , internet information services . Then it wants me to create a new account. Is this what I should be seeing here?

Andy - Same here. No problem at the moment, but I may want to add an activation tomorrow.

Good luck, Dave, G6DTN

Well my unentered activation seems to be safe enough in the secure storage medium of a waterproof paper logbook, so I will trust it to remain there until the Database is ready. Thank goodness that SOTA rules allow us to enter QSOs retrospectively, and don’t have a time limit.

Tomorrow, the day after, next week, November - I don’t care. I will just get my entries up to date when the system is ready. Thanks for managing this situation Andy.
