The reason is in 2007 East Cairn Law became a Marilyn and the incumbent AM was a friend of Richard’s or John’s and had been Shanghai’d into being AM. I was promoted to AM because I was prepared to do the paper work to add the new summit so I could get 1st activation and he was desperately trying to find a willing volunteer to take over! The rest is history. It had taken my predecessor 4 and bit years to find a fool prepared to take over never mind another 6 RMs as well.
Do region managers serve any useful role? It seems to be a redundant layer of “management” to me. I’m a region manager and I have had nothing to do for well over a decade.
I am also in that role for OE/OO and if there are no changes in summits it is fairly quiet but everyone is free to:
- be a promoter for SOTA in the region by for example give talks at local ham clubs
- organize meetups/ SOTA days
- answer questions of guest visiting
- support the Association manager
- run local diploma initiatives
and so on

Yes they do but mainly in new associations. Some AMs get help/input from their RMs when there are updates to be done.
Probably of limited value in a geographically small Association such as G but arguably necessary when the Association is large with significant regional differences.
Agree. In the early days of my now former RM regions I did a fair amount of local research and documentation. Once done it tends to not change much.
Further to my announcement above of Mark @M0NOM and Paul @G4IPB taking over from John G3WGV as the region managers for G/LD and G/NP respectively, I would now like to announce that Peter @G3TJE has decided to step down as region manager for both G/DC and G/SC. I would like to thank Peter G3TJE for being the region manager for both G/DC and G/SC for nearly 15 years now.
I was thinking about as to who the best candidates would be to become the region managers for G/DC and G/SC and thought John @M0WIV for G/DC and Tim @G5OLD for G/SC. I have been in contact with both John M0WIV and Tim G5OLD and they have agreed to become the region managers for G/DC and G/SC respectively so please join me in welcoming them as new region managers.
I can confirm that Richard @G3CWI, Jim @G0CQK and Phil @G4OBK have agreed to carry on as the region managers for G/SP, G/SB and G/TW respectively. I am still waiting to hear from Richard @G4ERP to see to he still wishes to carry on as region manager for G/CE and G/WB or to step down. I am also waiting to hear from David @G3RDQ to see if he wishes to carry on as region manager for G/SE or to step down.

I was thinking about as to who the best candidates would be to become the region managers for G/CE and G/WB and thought Robert @M0RWX for G/DC and Adrian @G4AZS for G/WB. I have been in contact with both Robert M0RWX and Adrian G4AZS and they have agreed to become the region managers for G/CE and G/WB respectively so please join me in welcoming them as new region managers.
I can confirm also that David @G3RDQ has decided to carry on as the region manager for G/SE for the time-being. However David G3RDQ has mentioned to me that if anyone activate in SOTA in the G/SE area is very keen to be region manager for G/SE, he said he would happily stand down as the G/SE region manager at this point. If anyone active in SOTA in the G/SE area has an interest in wanting to be G/SE region manager, I would suggest contacting David G3RDQ and also myself with regards to this.
I am currently communicating with all region managers in the England (G) Association to get regional notes updated for all regions and to make sure that we have the correct email address for all region managers also ready for when the England (G) SOTA update goes live in March which will be around when SOTA’s 23rd Anniversary will be (this upcoming 2nd March).
