Some activators set an alert containing question marks. Don’t they know where they are going?
Or do I miss something?
This weekend I will be in Poland. On Friday I plan to go SOTA with SQ9OJN. I can’t imagine that anyone is interested in an alert SP/PB2T/P with REF SP/??-??? or SP/BZ-???. Also worried about the KU6J spots this could generate.
Our plan is go to SP/BZ-014 and BZ-026, but plans may change because of the weather.
My idea is to set alerts when leaving the car, when we know where we are going.
Look for threads (there are quite a few) mentioning RBN. Folk use question marks when they’re planning several summits, don’t have good time-windows for when they’ll be at any particular one, and don’t have a reliable way of updating their alerts once they’re on their way. RBNgate (KU6J) will then still spot them, so chasers can find them, but doesn’t risk giving out incorrect references.

That, particularly if you can set the alert for just one summit at a time, is a better way, if you are able to do that.

Yes, I regularly do this because I don’t know where I’m going!
All I know is that I “plan” on doing some summits in a general area.
The order I do them and the time for activation will be determined by WX, traffic condx whilst travelling and even the ability to park my car!
Once I leave the house my ability to spot reliably diminishes rapidly.
I’d far rather see ??? alerts than incorrect ones.

Hoi Hans,
Use ??? Yes!
It’s easy when you activated several summits a day. We want that chasers will find you!! And there is not always an internet access, or even a sms contact possible to announce this on Sotawatch from the summit. Use ??? make it possible!! For chasers and activator a question… wich summits? So they have to listen very good to the activator. He will tell you this. So I use often the ??? I know very good where i am goiing! No jokes about that!

Thanks for the reply Sake. So in my case this means SP/??-??? should be avoided, but SP/BZ-??? plus in the comments field an indication what summits are planned is helpful.
In reply to PB2T:
Thats correct! We use the system, which recognize your signals, for a successful activations.
Indeed they can read your real activations in the comment. Thats right!
Succes in SP! You can also use XXX.
