Planned VK evening activation

(weather dependent) In the hope of catching some DX chasers, I am planning to activate VK2/HU-093 Mount Elliot tomorrow UTC 20/11/2013 from about 08:00 through 10:00 UTC with Rod VK2LAX.

I have activated this summit previously so I will get no activator points but hope to add a new association to some DX chasers. I will be operational on 20m and 40m SSB only (I will self-spot on SOTA Watch). Any S2S contacts very welcome of course.

This will still be a QRP activation 5W to an inverted-V.

Hello Ed,
I was listening for you on 20 and 12 m, but a could hear anything. Low noises on the Band. I have also called you (100 w, 2 El Quad), I am interesting, if You have heard me. Also on Freqency was G0RQL, Don.

Not sure if you qsy’d Holger but I was not hearing them at first then they changed aerial and no problem to work both Ed and Rod on long path.
After I worked Ed I said you were listening for him and he did call you, I also called you back to alert you to the call but failed to hear you this was at 0846 approx.73 Don G0RQL.

In reply to G0RQL:
I heard your QSO, Don, along with a DL & HBs. Unfortunately Ed and Rod didn’t hear my calls on any of the bands. Later I found why, I had left my KX3 set to 1W when testing earlier in the day (Blush)
May manage a qso when you are on a summit (and I am running some power  )

In reply to VK3XPT:
Thanks for the QSO Perrin, a nice surprise to hear you there and Ernie tells me you were using just your Alex loop.

In reply to OE7HPI:
Hi Holger, I had thought you had come back to my CQ call - it seems now from what you say that was not the case and you just tried calling? I could just hear you. I first experimented with 5W to a small vertical antenna, but then Rod VK2LAX set up his inverted-V and FT857. I’m sure if you had heard us on frequency, we could have made contact. The signal from Don in the UK was strong.

We’ll probably try this again in the future.

In reply to G0RQL:
Thanks for the contact yesterday Don. You were putting a good signal into Australia.

I was a good evening only disturbed later by hoards of “Christmas bugs” - Think Ladybirds only 20 times bigger. As we were the only point with light for a few Km, they were attracted and bounced around us and the equipment!

In reply to VK6MB:
Sorry we didn’t make the contact Mike, it would have been great to make the extra hop over to VK6 - Rod worked many of the usual VK1 VK3 and VK5 chasers, just didn’t quite make it over to VK6.

Andrew VK1NAM is trying another evening activation on Saturday, so you may want to try to get to him then, he’s heading up to Mt. Taylor according to his post.

I’m sure he’s already activated that summit this year, so he won’t get any activator points, so like Rod and I, we are only activating to give some longer distance chasers a chance.

In reply to VK2JI:
I hope for a contact in zhe future. When I am activator on 1800 or 200m m Summit, Ihad contacts to W and VA, but when I am chaser, I am in the valley and around are all mountains 2000 - 3000 m high, so I need good cdx.

Hi again Holger - we (Rod VK2LAX and myself) are planning another evening(for us) activation from a different summit VK2/IL-017 Bulgo Hill. I have posted an alert in SOTAWatch. Currently this is planned for Saturday (30th. Nov) evening our time - Saturday morning with you. There is a chance that I will need to reschedule depending upon the weather, in which case it will be the same time, the following day (Sunday).

In reply to VK2JI:

Ed, good luck for Saturday evening, hope the conditions are in your favor. The more exposure and interest we can generate from VK, might encourage EU activators to try S2S with us downunder.

The greyline was open on 20m last Saturday starting at 07:30 UTC, you should make the distance with Rod’s 897. 60 watts output from the 857D was ample and in most cases produced a 5-5 report well above the noise floor.

Hello Ed, I will look for you from home. We have winter and snow. there is no summit in the near to go, the cablecars beginning in the end of december and beginning time about 11 utc. and then I have to go 1 h or more. No S2S possible. There is one summit on 2300 m with a little HAM house, where is possible to overnight and to go to the summit in 20 min. But this summit is deletet from the SOTA management.

I look for Saturday morning.

Excuse my bad english, I hope you can understand. hi
