Some maybe cut for the top part of the Australian 2m band which is 144-148MHz.

You can send APRS messages on HF with JS8Call, which uses a similar modulation scheme to FT8. 40m seems to be the best bet (in Europe at least) for getting messages gated to the Internet and so to aprs.fi and aprs2 sota. Only done some brief tests so far, but hoping to investigate further.

While I realize this response is almost 2 year on from your post my recent interest in APRS took me to this video that demonstrates what you mentioned.
