Not a single CW activation announced

Looking at the Upcoming Activations Alerts there is not a single CW activation announced for today. Unusal for a day on a weekend! I wonder if this has happened before.

Weather here is terrible with snow and storm. I had hoped to work some activators blessed with better WX conditions.

Hi Heinz,

That’s a Winter Bonus indeed for an SSB only chaser like me!!

Kind regards and Season’s Greetings.

Dave

In reply to OE5EEP:

At one time it was unusual to see anything other than 2m FM activations and you could go for days without a single alert. How SOTA has grown!

In reply to OE5EEP:

Not unusual for this time of year Heinz. The next Alert for a CW activation is 1600 on the 4th February 2012.
Cold fingers and CW do not mix well.

Hi Hainz there used to be a TV advert over here done bay British Telecom

and it was “IT’S GOOD TO TALK”

Have a good Christmas and an even better New Year

In reply to 2E0NHM:

I remember it well Nigel.

Then it was replaced by the phrase “Let your fingers do the talking…”

How SOTA has grown!

In SOTA’s 1st full year of operation (2003) there were a total of 1376 activations spread across 9 associations. For 2011 (upto 16-DEC-2011) there have been 16547 activations across 57 associations.

Currently snowing on and off here, 1C, about 3cms snow and ice laying on the roads.

and it was “IT’S GOOD TO TALK”

That was a very successful marketing campaign by BT. Analysis of call patterns at the time showed that woman made longer calls than men. For men, most calls went along the lines of “Which pub are we going to?” “Black Bull at 8.00pm” “Right, I’ll see you there”. “Click!” When calls were charged per minute, men’s calls were always under the minute. The campaign was targeted towards men and all it had to do was make men’s calls last more than 1 minute to see a 100% increase in that revenue stream. 3 minutes and BT were “revenue Nirvana”

Deliciously simple and very effective.

Nigel, good to hear from you.

I have made 4889 activator QSOs so far this year, which have been:

2428 on CW, and 2461 on SSB/FM.

None of those 2461 fone QSOs from the summits have been with you, yet I remember the days when you never missed one of my activations!

It’s good to talk - please talk to me!

Currently thawing here quite quickly.

In that first year there were 94 activators listed on “all modes” and 19 activators listed on “CW”. SOTA has grown, and CW has grown at a faster rate!

We had our first snow of the winter yesterday, a ten minute light shower that didn’t settle. We have only had a couple of light ground frosts and in my garden we have roses, fuchsias, penstemons, pelargoniums, pansies and violets, and even the bedding dahlias still in flower.

When does winter start?

But the problem is more, when I work on HF I need 45min on the summit. Always in winter I´l not´ve the time. I may start with FM on 2m or higher to safe time.

Hi Roy how are you

You may be wrong there, not sure BT used that saying
The Yellow Pages use the saying “let your fingers do the Walking”

But it’s Christmas so save your fingers for opening presents

Hehehe :-))

Regards Nigel
have a good one

Hello Roy
I don’t care about cold wx because I can wear gloves but there is heavy rain since days in my area.
My tx don’t like rain.
I hope I can send an alert before next February.
Best 73 and season’s Greetings.

Welcome back Nigel, you have been missed, especially in the log of John G4YSS / GX0OOO.

Hello Andre
Looking forward to your next activation and hope the WX improves.
Just a light covering of snow so far at my QTH on the North Sea coast, but very cold.

Best Wishes for Christmas & the New Year to you both

That conjures up a hilarious picture, Roy!

Although I think you’ll find it was actually “Let your fingers do the WALKING”!

Merry Christmas,

I suspect you are correct Walt - I must have mis-heard !
