New Callsign G5JFJ

Hello,

With the Phase 2 rollout, I have changed from M0YUK to G5JFJ

Could I get it updated please?

Thanks,

Jared G5JFJ

No

Why do you want to look like a reciprocal licence holder? Or CIA/NSA spook?

:joy: Just want to not have a yucky callsign anymore and stick with the JFJ ending

YUK wasn’t the best suffix, was it? Was it allocated or did you choose it after a few :beer_mug:?

What if he does?

You definitely look like a spook being just down the road from Mormond Hill

I didn’t say YUK but sounded out what the Morse was like. I can see why you’d drop it though both for the “yucky” and my brain still flips Y and Q’s back and forwards in Morse after many years. You’d think it would stick by now but you’d be wrong.

I definitely should be charging to change these calls

You’re only 40 years out of date.

i didnt know you could get your license changed to a G callsign. They only reason I would choose a G call is for the 3 letter suffix. What suffix would people choose if they could choose a new callsign? something that would be nice in morse would be good for my lifes ambition to one day have the get up and go to learn it completely lol.

I’d forgotten we could change our calls as well Anthony. I have just changed mine for the following reasons.

  • MM0 takes a long time to send on the key, I’ve changed to something more dotty.
  • MIKE MIKE ZERO in SSB confuses many outside the UK despite M calls being in ham use for 29 years in the UK.
  • FMF in Morse works for people, the pattern sticks and it has an OK rhythm.
  • Again on SSB FOX MIKE FOX causes brain lockups for people. I thought it would be fast to say but single syllable phonetics seem to get lost, two syllables work better.

All the above combined has caused regular and repeated issues for the other side especially in pileups etc. I have had 22 years of struggling because it’s just a poor combination.

I still have 2 full licences, so I have changed the old B to the new call and will l be ditching MM0FMF when I have to. There are lots to things to make sure that get changed such as accounts on websites. However, when it is relinquished, I still have 5 years to change accounts etc. before it gets reissued but I want to get it done sooner not later.

Apart from account changes, there’s static pages on websites like my club webpages and things for SOTA that need updating.

So if you want to change Anthony, consider the following, MM0 is a rubbish prefix. MM4 would be OK but that isn’t available. Go for 2 syllable phonetics. Brian G8ADD has a good call… ALPHA DELTA DELTA just is easy to say and is quick to say but lasts long enough to be audible in a pileup. I worked G6DDN on 2m at the weekend. DDN sounds excellent on the key (dah-di-dit dah-di-dit dah-dit) and it suggests repeated letters are OK if they are together. ALPHA DELTA DELTA works but not DELTA ALPHA DELTA. I think FOX FOX MIKE would work better than what I had. It was really hard for many to get all the M’s and F’s in the right order.

All I have to do is practice sending it as my fingers has 22 years muscle memory to relearn !

Could be a good time to start learning to send with the other hand Andy, I am bit like yourself the M0O is a lot of dahs puts me to sleep especially when up in Scotland

May have a browse on the ofcom website and see what is available a Call Sign Suffix ending either OAT or WKR always liked my foundation M6WKR.

Thanks for checking, going to have a check later on G5OAT or G6WKR and practice on the key, know any good engravers to alter my trophies😀.

I won’t be changing my callsign - too engrained in my brain. It works OK in CW but people seem to find it tricky to say.

Congrats on the new callsign! It’s nice people have a choice now.

Makes me think you’re the last step in compiling  I was still thinking you’d go for GM5SPY though.

I reserved my callsign back in 1984 when I passed the morse test. My class B callsign was an utter mouthful and I wanted something easier. It kind of worked but there are a number of people who reverse the letters and hear G4RZR instead of my actual call.

There was a local who had the letters RRA in his call. I always liked the way that sounded both on voice and CW.

to change or not to change that is the question….

I have been considering changing my callsign M0NOM as it is awful in CW, just one dit in a sea of dahs. From an SSB point of view the most troublesome letter was Oscar, apart from folk getting the n and M swapped around.
