Alan, Perversely I went low instead of high for your MG activation. Mo and I had been meaning to visit the Carsaig Sea Arches for a few years now, and finally got round to it on Monday.
We endured a very rough but rewarding walk along the rugged south coast of the Ross of Mull. The coastal scenery was super all the way, and the basalt columns and sea arches were spectacular. It also felt appropriate that we came across a large herd of feral goats.
It was great to chase you on 2m FM from the shore. We were in a POTA area, so the QSO’s with you and Jack @GM4COX contributed to my log. Of course, I could have activated the POTA from the car park, but that wouldn’t have done it justice.
Congratulations again on your achievement!
And now for @GM4LLD Andy’s next geology lesson. Basalt columns are hexagonal shaped. They are formed when thick basalt lava flows slowly cool. When they cool, they contract and fracture. Hexagons are the most efficient shapes in nature, with no wasted space. Eg. when a lake bed dries up and cracks, or a bee hive. That’s my understanding of it anyway. Brian @G8ADD is welcome to correct and embellish my description.
Famous ones - Fingal’s Cave, Staffa. Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland. I’m led to believe they are at either end of a seam of basalt that goes under the Irish Sea. Again, Brian will keep us right here!
Thanks for all the contacts and the pics - not sure which goat is meant to be me…..

Congratualations Alan in acheiving Mountain Goat-Well deserved
Congratulations Alan - great achievement! I have greatly enjoyed our chases, S2Ss and especially those contacts on CW! As they say in Norn Iron, “keep her lit”
Thanks Esther,
Good to catch you from the lakes the other day, you were a huuuuuge signal ![]()
Just 984 points to the next one !

Congratulations Alan. It’s a lot harder in Scotland so you certainly earned it! Feet up for a while or forge ahead further? I’m guessing the latter. Good luck with MG-2.

Thanks John,
We are very fortunate to have so many hills to visit in fantastic areas of the country, so onward it is! I suspect the rate may slow down a bit though! I have a few “expeditions” on the sketch-pad in my head, so hopefully get some of them done over the next year or so.
