Would it help to have a carry bag that encloses the pole and has a zipped opening to allow pulling the mast out? It could have ties attached to fit it on the back of the pack at a lower height.
For now I have no top cap and carry the mast in a side pocket and tied to short loop at top of back of pack. Bit ineligent.
I use two sturdy walking poles. I can use one to hold the mast aka David VK3IL method.
