Logging in the wet

Ha ha ha! Love it. Off Topic Alert.

This is what moss was invented for… think I should leave it at that.

By the way, the reverse doesn’t work… you can’t log contacts on moss.

The important fact I have learned here is that RITR pages do not stick
to each other when the wet pages dry out.

Dead right.

I use the smallest version of the riteintherain spiral note book.
Item number 135 written on the back. 3 inch by 5 inch. Big enough for me. I sometimes have to use two rows if it is a summit to summit, but rarely.

The other thing that I know some people swear by, particularly people working in the outdoors who have to take notes on non weatherproof paper, is a Weather Writer.

I am not connected with any of these companies and I am not trying to promote them for any financial gain.

Did you see mine being used in anger on a rather damp Hallin Fell yesterday? Maybe not, it was proving hard work to get anything to actually write down!

Rite in the Rain must be the one thing less suitable
for lavatory purpose than that awful Izal toilet paper beloved of
institutional facilities

Izal? Sheer luxury! It were “Bronco” we 'ad when I were in t’Borstal!

Don’t worry Paul, I do carry one of those compact Andrex rolls in my pack… it’s stored just below the kitchen sink. After all, I didn’t want you using that Memory Map paper - I just couldn’t be held responsible for the consequences!

I would also recommend Zecom waterproof paper, which I use to print my own log sheets. It does need a laser printer or photocopier though - if you try inkjet printing the ink just washes off leaving hardly a trace! It takes pencil perfectly.

My, what a timely topic, having just attempted an activation a few days ago and being caught in heavy rain!

For anyone who uses a paper log, I would highly recommend the Fisher Space Pen; surprised nobody has mentioned them. I have been using one for years to sign geocache logs, including many with damp/wet log sheets. The Space Pen uses thixotropic ink pressurized by nitrogen, allowing it to write in various adverse conditions (in extreme heat and cold, in a vacuum, upside down, and underwater). No connection, just a satisfied customer.

I found out the hard way that a standard paper tablet failed miserably once the rain started; need to pick up a Rite in the Rain notebook myself. The voice recorder idea is an interesting one, as I already have one (not to mention the same capability in my phones), but they aren’t waterproof.

I have my log sheets on a lightweight plastic clipboard and use an elastic band to hold down the loose ends. Being less than A5 and smaller than the clipboard they are less prone to the effect of the wind<

Ditto Gerald! Architects A0 waterproof paper from local printer supplier cut down to A4. Use my own Excel SOTA template. I have a friend who has laser printer. Like Paul’s - 30 contacts per A5 sheet. Four sequentially numbered A5 sheets (good for keeping sheets in order in overall master binder) from A4 (back and front). A5 clipboard using ‘flip’ clips to hold sheets down which also secure pencil (never use a pen). Used this set-up for over 6/7 years. Works for me!

PS: Pics from Blackmount still to be sent to Paul and yourself. Had been away with work commitments then Knoydart. Just back from LD land with Anne GM4UXX.

In reply to GM4COX:

Well Jack I thought I’d try the Memory Map paper as it would be useful for surveying work in the rain as well as SOTA and I could print on it with my inkjet printers, but I was disappointed to find that it does not take pencil very well. I am thinking of buying a cheap mono laser printer so that I can use Rite in the Rain paper, but I suppose a few pence down the local library would be less costly, if rather less convenient - that is if they’d let me put in the paper. Might need to get a copy shop to do it.

I listened for you from Knoydart - could just detect you on 14MHz CW, but not sufficiently strong to be workable. Oh well, looking on the bright side, I would be most unlikely to activate them for SOTA Complete.

Looking forward to those pics. My report is up on Summitsbase as usual.
