I’m on Kinder Scout. My palm paddle with palm cube is sending a from the dot lever and r from the dash lever. I can’t remember how to get into the setting on the hb1b to make it work with an external keyer. Can anyone provide the solution?

Hi Tom

Did you plug the key in before power up? The manual I found online says it detects a paddle or straight key at that time. i.e. your paddle plus keyer needs to look like a straight key (which I assume it does until it sends).

Edit: If that doesn’t work… hold the dash paddle in as you turn the power on. That might make it look like a straight key too.

Key/Paddle
:
The HB-1B has an automatic function that determines what type of key is being used and is initiated on power up. You will hear (in CW) the sound of the letter “A” if a paddle is connected or the letter “M” if a straight key is connected. Connect tip to paddle dot or straight key’s contractor. Connect ring to paddle dash or straight key’s ground. Connect to sleeve paddle’s ground. Tie ring and sleeve together for straight key. Must plug the straight key first before power up to
activity.

Yeah I read all that after I got home. Didn’t make much sense in terms of solving it tbh. Marc’s ideas didn’t work, but did give me a clue. Obviously my HB1B seemed to think my paddle was a paddle - I needed it to think it was a straight key so I could use the Palm Cube external keyer instead of the rig’s internal keyer. If no key is plugged in at power up, the default setting for the HB1B is for a paddle anyway, so I was stuck with that on the summit. After getting home and being able to consider things in a more relaxed setting, the solution was easy. Plug the headphones into the keyer jack at power on. Now the rig thinks it’s connected to a straight key. Swap the headphone jack for the keyer jack, and everything working perfectly!

Best to prove the system here than trying to fix it on Teide

Make sure that you take the same headphones as the resistance of different types varies. If you know someone handy with a soldering iron they might make you a shorting plug to take.

Simple’s

I use a dedicated cable - stereo jack at one end mono at the other. Sits in a spectacle ‘oyster’ case along with Palm paddle and Cube.

Cheers
