Lake District SOTA Weekend - Spring 2025

Blimey! This has come round fast! Sorry to hear you can’t make the Saturday evening Mark @M0NOM, always fun meeting SOTA folks.

Forecast for both weather and enthusiasm are currently looking good, so plans are:

Thursday PM
Old Man of Coniston G/LD-013

Friday
Great Gable G/LD-005
Kirk Fell G/LD-014
Pillar G/LD-006

Saturday
Scafell Pike G/LD-001

Sunday
Helvellyn G/LD-003
Seat Sandell G/LD-022
Fairfield G/LD-007
St Sunday Crag G/LD-010

Remains to be seen if the enthusiasm holds up and legs can manage it!

I expect I may not have mobile signal at the Wasdale Campsite Thursday night through to Saturday afternoon. So may well need to do some wildcard alerting to accommodate changing plans. But does anyone know if I’m likely to get mobile signal once up on my planned Friday and Saturday summits?

I normally prefer HF CW, but will endeavour to get on 2M for some S2S action.

Last year we just all ordered as we got there, which worked out just fine at the Elleray. I’m not sure they’ll accept a group booking with a large number of people (hopefully!).

The Elleray on the left as you descend down into Windermere from the junction on the A591 - it’s also 2 mins walk from the bus and train station.

If you go for a drink at the Wasdale Head Inn they have wifi.

Normally we meet between 6:30pm and 7:00pm. Note that I can be at the Elleray on Friday evening if anyone is up for a natter then. I don’t head down South until Saturday morning.

Cheers, Mark.

My plan is to do Dale Head G/LD-020 and Robinson G/LD-021 on Friday, it’s not 100% but the most likely.

If it works. I was there in October and it connected but had no internet connection.

I found you didn’t have to walk very far along the path towards Illgill Head G/LD-029 before I got Vodafone coverage. Just a bit of extra height was all it needed.

Wasdale seemed more or less non existent on EE last year - but it was fine on the summits…

I’d be up for a pint and a natter on Friday if we are outside and you can cope with the dogs… They are much better behaved in a pub than on a summit…

I expect you’ll be fine on Scafell Pike.
For spotting you’ve also got options on 2m APRS, Lora APRS and Sotamat.

Can I remind everyone coming for this event and who has a LoRa tracker to bring it and switch it on from the start of your walk. This is an opportunity to test the coverage provided by the ten or so QTH-based LoRa iGates and the two hilltop digipeaters in and around the Lake District in a way that we locals alone would take much longer to do.

Will certainly try for that! I’m coming up Friday morning and meeting Allan @GW4VPX later too.
