Correct. The derivation remains the same but the word, like many others, has been increasingly Anglified by non-Gaelic speakers through the centuries. Hopefully our Irish and Scots-Gaelic forebears had better jokes to pass the time than we do, though…
Bearing in mind the translation of the summit name of Lochnagar, somehow I doubt it!
Not to mention “Bod an Deamhain” in the Cairngorms, now called “Devil’s Point” and renamed to avoid upsetting Queen Victoria during her Balmoral holidays with its true translation……
Great report and photo’s @2M0WNA Mike - I really enjoyed the reading! I see the GM knock knock jokes aren’t much better than the GW ones it’s been great making a few CW qso’s with you over the past few days - keep it up
On a finishing note:
Knock Knock…
Who’s there?
Sonia…
Sonia who?
Sonia foot, I can smell it!
bye for now
Agreed. Welcome to the bad pun club - the one you posted here gets you five-star lifelong membership! Hope you are home safe after a great Irish trip and missed the worst of the storms. Thanks again so much for taking my CW chase calls - a huge boost for my novice’s confidence. Speak again soon. 73 Mike
Hahaaa - I thought you’d like that one I’ve got all the time in the world on summit for someone learning CW, I know how hard it was to start from scratch, your doing a fine job! We were very lucky with regards to wx, only bad bit was the ferry back - poor Martha had to stand out on deck a few times! Deffo speak soon
take care and 73. Ben

Many thanks Craig. Really appreciated the call from Skipton on a tricky day on 40m. 73. Mike
Nice report Mike. Looks a bit cold and desolate there. Anyways thanks for the contact, you were absolutely booming through but then most of Scotlands finest do to down here.
Stay safe and best 73
Hi Allen. Many thanks for the contact on the day and pleased to hear the /P setup was performing ok to Yorkshire. It was certainly cold in the wind but the great view made up for it. 73 Mike
Well Mike, I attempted to follow in your footsteps this afternoon. I managed ok on the way up, but somehow got lost on the way down and ended up back at the road some 200 m north of my starting point!
Lovely hill and, as you say, cracking 360 views. It was 16 C this afternoon and my first T-shirt activation of the year. Let’s hope there will be more. Although it was warm, I wasn’t tempted to use the summit swimming pool.
