How many activators use the PFR-3 on their activations??

I am one of them… Kurt HB9AFI

I use a PFR-3 with link dipole or W3EDP long wire ant…

On the very rare occasions I do activate now, it is usually with my PFR-3.

I have used a PFR-3 from more than 120 summits. Since last summer I have a KX3 and sidelined the PFR-3. I would never sell it though, an amazing little radio and good value for money!

I’ve worked Heinz’s PFR-3 many times and he consistently has an fb signal
I think it would be a great SOTA rig and have thought of getting one myself.

One thing I’d consider is the lack of 17m. As sunspots decline, 17m and 20m will be the main “money bands”, especially for working into Europe from the Northeast. Also, I’ve found 40m is far more reliable than 30m for local contacts (m speaking from my experience in Eastern NA. For an example of 20/17/15 propagation to Europe with QRP and current solar activity, look here:

As you can see 17m is better than either 20 or 15 over longer periods of time. As sunspots decline the curve will shift downward a little but 17m will still be quite useful.
I have an ATS-3 which covers 20/30/40/80 but am considering a Weber TriBander set up for 17/20/40 for activations, mainly because I want 17m plus the more convenient display/knob tuning. All 3 of these rigs were designed by KD1JV and have excellent receivers and low power drain. My stepson Christian KF4LXB has a TriBander configured for 15/20/40 and really likes it, both for home and activating.

Use PFR3 and KX3 with a norcal doublet.
