Jimmy's first trophy

This has, kind of, been a long time coming. Jimmy’s first involvement in SOTA was way back on 7th September 2002, when as a 9 year old, he accompanied me to the summit of Shining Tor G/SP-004. I had just worked Shirley MW3GTE/P (later MW0YLS, RIP) on Gyrn Moelfre GW/NW-049, and she coaxed me into wandering up the hill I was parked beneath.

Jimmy continued enthusiastically accompanying me on all my expeditions, often in his wellies in those early days. He was soon doing bits and bobs like setting the SOTA Beam up, improving his map reading and learning about amateur radio. When he decided he wanted to do his Foundation Licence course in 2005, it was with the sole aim of doing SOTA. He had already accompanied me and helped on well over 200 activations by then.

So he’s been involved for nearly 6.5 years. But today came the first trophy. We drove out from home this morning with him on 983 chaser points. I went to activate The Cloud G/SP-015 before heading north for the NP Fun Day. Jimmy (sensibly) chose to remain in the car for the 25 minutes or so it took me to ascend, activate and descend. Here’s how it went for him from there…

1404 G7SKR/P on SP-010 (1) 1044
1412 G1JTD/P on NP-008 (0) 1044

So it was Phil G1OPV that gave him the all important 1000th point with the S2S to Boulsworth Hill.

Congratulations Jimmy. I’m sure the Mountain Goat won’t be too far behind.

Congratulations Jimmy! My son is coming up to 3yrs old, and I hope he follows in your footsteps. My current aim is to achieve half goat/sloth and I know how much work I’ve put in to get where I am, so I can really appreciate how much work you’ve put in. Good luck with the Mountain Goat award.

Well done Jimmy! Looks like you had lots of fun and lots of contacts in the Lake District. Unfortunately I was at my parents so could not join in with the fun. I will email your dad about meeting up at some point when I am not so busy at work!

Here’s to the next 1000 and a mountain goat award :o)

Hi Helen,

Thanks for the reply. I wasn’t in the Lake District I was in the Northern Penines. I was activating Wild Boar Fell G/NP-007. This was also the NP fun day.

Jimmy M3EYP

In reply to M3EYP:
Nice one Jimmy !! great achievement, and I am sure the next 1000 pts will only be a short time away.

In reply to M3EYP:
Well done Jimmy you will have to show me when you recieve it, i was in my late 30’s the first time i ever recieved a trophy so you doing well. Sean M0GIA

In reply to M1EYP:
Hi Tom,

Please give Jimmy my compliments on being awarded his trophy. I can only hope that one day I will catch up with him.

No doubt the vast majority of his chaser QSO’s were worked from summits (as per the list above). He must be a real outdoor terrier by now and in possession at an early age, of the basic qualities required for Mountain Leader.

Not only that, he has shown he can turn his hand to hunting from the shack too.

Well done Jimmy,

73, John G4YSS.

(PS: Excellent on getting Wild Boar done. Hope you liked it.)
