I heard G4DMU calling CQ Sota this afternoon /staitic Mobile from G/SP-003 on 145.500 and his working Freq was 144.650. It took me quite awhile to get my self heard by him but with a friends help I eventually got through to him. I asked him if he was operating from a car to which he replied yes static mobile. I then told him that his contacts were not valid for Sota because operating from a car is not allowed. He quickly appolgised and clearly did not understand how Sota works. He then carried on operating. I did not enjoy having to burst his bubble and spoil his fun. So I have put this on here to inform the 10 or so contacts that he had. Not sure if I have done the right thing or gone the right way about it.
I heard him earlier, i think he was working different people on different Freq’s when i heard him, he did tell them he was in the car then gave the SOTA ref and then moved on, i did try calling him once just to get him on a Freq to explain but he could not hear me, so you did the right thing, if he would of heard me i would have done the same as you.
I think the SOTA rules should amended to invalidate any activation in which the activator uses the term ‘static mobile’. It is an oxymoron, meaningless and confusing.
Should - for example - a 2m FM operator driving in a car [better still, is being driven], sign ‘static mobile’ on his next over when the car is stationary at the traffic lights, and revert to ‘mobile’ when the lights change?
I did something similar a few months ago for the same hill (different call) - I think it was a 145 alive event, and I too had to explain it wasn’t valid for SOTA. (At the time I was in a rather damp tarp with some weather…)
There are summits where you can get a car into the AZ - and then you need to completely separate yourself and your gear from the car in order to conduct a valid activation.
However, I don’t believe it is possible to get a car anywhere near the AZ on Ward’s Stone G/SP-003 so not sure what the op was thinking of here anyway.
