Human powered activation of Ingleborough G/NP-005

Great report Colin, and congrats to your son!

But I felt a bit disappointed like “other” Colin @G8TMV above.
“Human powered activation” ? I was indeed expecting some Rockmite powered by a hand/foot/mouth/… crank generator … NO BATTERIES, yuck !

Someting like this …

I think it is a bit difficult to crank and key at the same time, maybe adding a supercap to bridge the transmission periods would help, or if your son is with you, let him do the cranking, hi.

73 and keep up the good work !

Sorry to disappoint you Luc. I agree, in hindsight my choice of words was poor.

Still thinking about interesting ways to power a radio. My friend challenged me years ago to try to make a candle powered radio. Maybe in winter time it might be more practical, especially if there’s snow. Peltier modules seem to be fairly cheap.

The maths are interesting. SNAP-27 thermal generators used by Apollo generated 75W of power at 30V. They needed 1250W of thermal power to achieve that.

75/1250 = 6% efficiency.
