Hallo Joe,
Viel Erfolg und komm gut wieder runter! Ich bin am Montag in der Steiermark. Ich fürchte, das wird nicht klappen…
73 Heinz, OE5EEP
Hallo Heinz,
Vielen Dank für die Wünsche.
Ein andermal passt es wieder.
73 Joe
Hi Joe,

Ed DD5LP JN58la.
Hi Joe,
It’s obvious that this is a big challenge so good luck and take care,
73, John
Hi Ed,
Looks like line of sight but 167 km. That should be fine.
Thanks for the support.

Arrived at Erzherzog Johann Hut. The highest elevated hut in Austria at 3454m . Guide will decide in the next minutes if we go already today. But most likely tomorrow morning.

take care! under these conditions, I would not dare to ascent to the summit!
Mission completed!
Activation successful with the help of the OE5 Fanclub:
Peter OE5AUL
Sylvia OE5YYN
Martin OE5REO
Karl OE5JKL
Franz OE5FSM
OE5JFE JOE was on the summit around 0615 and we were able to work him on 145 475. 145,500 was not possible due to other QSOs on that frequency.
Congratulations!!
Sylvia OE5YYN
Rats! I’ve been listening on 145.500 with the beam pointing his way since 8am local (0600 UTC) and no one posted a spot to say he was on 145.475.
Well at least he’s safe, I was starting to worry when I hadn’t heard anything.
That’s life!
73 Ed DD5LP.
Congratulations to Joe for this great achievement and all of you OE5 guys for being such good friends.
Joe started calling CQ on 145,500 at 08 13 but had to QSY to 145,475 immediately - and anounced that, too!
There was no time for a spot as they were in the middle of a snow storm and didn’t have much time…
Sorry Ed…!
Got stuck in traffic on the way to my chasing location this morning. Missed you by 10 mins. Sry.
Congrats! Must have been a very challenging activation considering the wx conds. Great respect. Salute.
Hi Sylvia,
Oh well, I was certainly listening at 08:13 local - so it looks like the path wasn’t there anyway. I might have tried harder if one of the chasers had spotted Joe, but I also understand that as he was with a group and the conditions were bad so he wouldn’t have a lot of time in any case. Great that he bagged the contacts that he did.
As I said, my concern was, when I didn’t hear him, that something might have happened, so thanks for your post on here.
73 Ed.
First of all I would like to congratulate Joe on his fabulous achievement … to be honest I never thought that with the miserable weather we had today he would make it to the summit and also be able to make some QSO’s!!
My plan was to go on a local mountain (OE/OO-070) but due to the wet and cold conditions I decided to chase him from a small local hill near to my home qth instead. I had my HB9CV with me … but I could make the contact with 10 watts and the 1/2-wave vertical mounted on the roof of my car. The distance between us was 140km!
73 Martin, OE5REO
Hello everyone!
I have just arrived at my home QTH.
Big thanks to everyone following my adventure. Big applause to the OE5 fanclub. You all made my day a bigger success than it was already.
Sylvia, Peter, Martin, Karl and Franz I am very gratefull for have you as friends
My appologies for not spotting myself. The time was so limited and with Sabine, Daniel and Martin our mountainguide waiting in the cold I could not stay any longer.
Thank you Martin @OE5REO for taking the video.
Will upload some teaser pictures soon. I will make a video of course that I plan to edit tomorrow.
But now first of all a hot shower
EDIT:
Ascend just before Kleinglockner
We made it!
Activation at 30 km/h wind, snowfall and about -7 °C
Without the guidance of our guide it would have not been possible with those conditions.
73 and a big thank you again! Joe
