Help locating I/AA-XXX summits

I’m planning a Christmas trip to Süd Tirol (St. Ulrich, near Bozen/Bolzano). I’ve been trying to mark the nearby SOTAs on my hiking map (Kompass #699). Many of them I find OK, but there are some that I simply cannot identify.

Can someone possibly verify that the lat/lon for these summits are correct? Looking on the SOTA Mapping Project, some of them seem like they might be a bit off unless my mapreading skills have totally abandoned me.
I/AA-316 Cima Grava
I/AA-315 Cima del Vento
I/AA-317 Munt Pez
I/AA-319 Monte Muro
I/AA-320 Cima Raciesa
and where is I/TN-323?

Further, does anyone have any tips for snowshoe SOTAs in that area that can be done reasonably easily for someone who is not familiar with the territory?

I’d be grateful for any help. There certainly must be one or two SOTAs I can activate while my wife and daughters are on the ski slopes or in the wellness spas, but I just don’t know where they are!

tnx, 73

Holger,

In reply to HB9DST:Ohh Paul, I like Alto Adige and as you could see, Monte Pez (I/AA-317) was first activated from myself and i could confirm, that the published coordiantes are wrong! Monte Pez is 46°30’41.36 / 11°34’28.55 but in Winter ??? i’don’t believe, that you could activate this summit in Winter. There is no cable car only a hick path from the “Seiser Alm” to the “Schlern-Häuser” which are closing in Octobre. Good luck in St. Ulrich and greetings to Kastelruth where i am every Octobre.

We are aware that many of the SOTA summit locations for Italy are wrong. They were included into the SOTA program before we had the tools and resources that we have today to analyse the proposals. We thought that we could rely on association managers to follow the General Rules and develop their association summit lists accordingly, since they should know the geography better that we did. As our analytical capabilities have developed and as more resources have become available we have encountered shortcoming in some of our earlier associations. We are working to resolve all of these but it is a major task across several associations.

For Italy, we will need to review every current summit. This is clearly needed from our reviews so far. Paul HB9DST refers to some of the I/AA summits. To give you an perspective of the problem a portion of our review of I/AA summits near where he has planned to go was:
I/AA-313 Wrong location this is on the 2000m contour
I/AA-314 Not P150 vs AA-322. This location is off summit. Summit is within same 2300, contour as AA-322
I/AA-315 Wrong location. This location lies below 400m near the river just slightly north east of the centre or Merano
I/AA-316 Wrong location. This location lies between 700m & 800m contours just north of Caines
I/AA-317 Wrong location as this is between to 2100m and 2200m contours
I/AA-318 Not P150 vs AA-327 within same 2180m contour
I/AA-319 Wrong location. This locations is between the 1300 & 1400m contours and is in the valley close to the Via Petscheid
I/AA-320 Wrong Location. There is a P150 summit just to the north of this location at 11.724583 46.580482 but this is about 2350m.
I/AA-321 Correct name is Monte Altacroce and correct location is 11.213436 46.855965 which will qualify as P150

As you can see this is a pretty bad situation. We are however working steadily to review all of the I and IS0 summits along with an extensive proposal from the association for additional summits that appears to have the same issues.

Unfortunately because of the popularity of SOTA and the number of proposals for new associations as well as the regular update requests, we have to continue our review of I and ISO summits in between other proposals - as and when - it is going slowly.

If there is anyone in our SOTA sommunity who is familiar with what is required to verify summit prominence (perhaps including Landserf or Winprom) and location mapping who would like to assist by taking part in helping us resolve issues with association reviews in general and in particular right now the I and IS0 associations, then we would be pleased to hear more, as that could assist us getting the I and IS0 associations properly established. Furthermore someone with such interest might be interested on going in helping us speed up review of new proposals so that SOTA might be able to expand a bit more rapidly.

In reply to G0CQK:

Hello Jim

I would be glad to help you out on checking the summit lists, already got pretty comfortable with Landserf when doing the update of YO ARM and have some python scripts easing the task, they just need a little more hacking to adapt it to other situation (way too YO focused and on getting new summits)
